Outside of Long Cove Club, I haven't read much hear about other private clubs that are on island.  I know there are some well regarded off island but can anyone provide seem insight on the private clubs on Hlton head?

Do a search here on the others. You'll find that Colleton River,  May River, Old Tabby, Chechessee Creek, Belfair and Berkeley Hall all have received favorable comments here.

Unfortunately, none of those are on the island.

Dan, take a look at Wexford. The remodeled course is outstanding. I know nothing about membership there, but the club and staff are very welcoming.

I worked at Long Cove for 4 years. Top course on the island, in my opinion, but can be hard to get a game if you're not with a member. It's always busy.
Sea Pines CC is a cute, friendly course redone by Clyde Johnston. Good bunkering, views, green complexes and wont beat you up. I have not seen the new Wexford. The remaining private course are not worth talking about.

All the blue-ribbon courses are off-island (or in the case of Haig Point, on an adjacent island.)

Bear Creek in HH Plantation is nice enough, same can be said for the GC at Indigo Run.  The rest is blah, and the 2 best by far are Long Cove and Wexford.  Now--drive a bit west on 278, or north on 170, and fine options abound.

Chechesee Creek is an excellent golf experience, good caddies, ability to walk, solid shot values, plays longer than yardage,  interesting course that grows on you more every time you visit.  Trying playing it several times before you discount the need to drive there.  Great staff, charming clubhouse and good food as well.  TRUE golf.

I friend from home is raving about Wexford where he is a member, especially after the renovation.  Here is a GCA thread discussing Wexford:

i played Wexford last month and enjoyed it.  as everyone has mentioned (and ironically posted on the club's website ) the greens are something else.  i thought the 18th was a bit of a blah finish, even though it's right off the water, and didn't realized the fairway ended on the 11th hole and brought the water into play.. but i'm picky sometimes.  people don't like the 15th green and the pond that fronts it, but it is unique.

CR is right off the island.  of the row of clubs on the north side of the access highway it is no more than 15 minutes off so it's not like you can ride your bike if you're on island.. but again it's about choice.  i played the dye course and loved it.  one strong hole after another.  i was supposed to play the nicklaus cse the day before that but my flight wouldn't land so i can't offer any insight there.

as Bill mentions CCC is a fabulous place, but know you are talking a bit of a drive.  lots of fun and there are some stretches that make you open up your eyes and grab your attention.  but if you are living on the island i'd probably find something closer.

It seems as if Long Cove and Wexford are the best choices?  I actually have never been to HHI but my inlaws go annually and love it.  My FIL plays the Palmetto Dumes courses and  isn't really that particular.

A recent inheritance that was split between my wife and my inlaws has opened up the idea of buying a home on HHI for the inlaws to live in and us to visit and inherit down the road.  I have been poking around for a secondary membership been though its not all that economical to get me through the winters in NY.

I was surprised by the decrease in home prices in Lomg Cove since I checked several years ago.  I recall a million being the minimum but now it appears some thing decent can be had for far less today.

So I want a fun club with good golf and decent amenities and access, not too much unaccompanied outside play.

Wexford is a course i definitely could play everday.

That being said I had the worst encounter with a member on the course for a couople holes while playing as a single when he lined me I have had anywhere; the biggest non culturally impaired asshole ever.

Staff is great but after rolling in and warning them they had a member with anger management and attitude problems following me in they let their hair down a bit and admitted to having a lot of A type personalities who were tought to deal with. I think you will also have to have a LOT of money to fit in as the homes assocaited with the course are cock of the block look at me types. There was also a story about the former GM having an affair witth female President , etc. I guess if you like drama it could work

I doubt there is a better program than at Long Cove though I personally feel the course a bit overrated. Once you buy your dues package is "all-inclusive" of HOA, boat slip. golf membership... etc. and not that expensive.

PM if you like, a buddy happens to live there on the 14th hole, isa one of the leading realtors in the area and a golf nut to boot, many time club champ.

I coincidentally did some similar research very recently:  with mortgage interest rates as low as they are, a friend and I are thinking about buying a place somewhere in the low country (HHI, Kiawah, Sea Island) that we would primarily rent out for vacations, but could use ourselves when/if we have the time.  When I looked at the prices in the Long Cove section of HHI, I was surprised at how low the prices seemed, given the regard with which the course and club are held.  (I played Long Cove several years ago and enjoyed it, but don't know anything about the neighborhoods or homes -- and don't have a sense for where prices were historically).
