RTJ and NGLA

From the current GD Rankings Thread:

National Golf Links of America, Southampton, N.Y.
C.B. Macdonald, 1909.
Remodeled by Perry Maxwell, 1939.
Remodeled by Robert Trent Jones, 1948 & 1969.

Anyone care to let on what the R T J 1 did at NGLA? This is the first I'm reading of such help/heresy.

Ronald its listed as having an RTJ restoration in the Architects of Golf which Whitten wrote so its not suprising.

The fact that they give two years, twenty years apart, makes me think that it's not a mistake.

I'm doubting NGLA, like nearly every other course, was immune to fads/"improvements"

The course was off a lot of radar screens until the 1990's

Rees has been a member for years, so his father being involved wouldn't surprise me at all

Any noteworthy impact on NGLA from RTJ, SR. would be the early story of the year for me. I'm hoping that Patrick chimes in or I hear from RW.

The fairway coradors were fairly narrow with abandoned bunkers out in the trees when Carl Olsen took over as super after the 1986 Open at Shinny. Perhaps, RTJ was incolved in creating strategic tree usage!

Using HistoricAerials.com and the slider bar to compare various years, to my eyes there doesn't appear to be any big changes from the years 1954 to 1960 to 1969.

Joe,

If the dates are accurate, those historical photos from the slider bar would fit within the time he purportedly did the work (1948 and 1969).

My information on the abandoned bunkers came from playing golf with Carl over a dozen times when he was the super at Desert Forrest.  He claimed to have removed over 5000 trees over the years.  I am pretty certain that at least 2000 trees were removed from 1989 until he left.

This listing of RTJ's work cites that he "remodeled" NGLA in 1948 & 1969. No other info provided.

Will there be a need for therapy (and showers ;) ;)) if it's discovered some of the favorite treehouse features at NGLA were RTJ?

Rees was responsible for two major changes at NGLA

1) The offering of non-metal lobster-crackers (recently reverted back to metal...credit to P. Mucci).

2) The inclusion of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups at Halfway House. I'm told by Tom Paul that Hershey has supplied Rees with both a favorable price for the candies as well as giant cup molds that can be inverted and placed onto fairways and grassed over.

RTJ did no renovations....and most of the tree removal occurred after Carl left.

I think I heard Jones, RT, did work on the irrigation system a long time ago

The club does not like to attach “other” architects names to their course


Karl (with a “K”) Olson got the ball rolling on tree removal and green expansions when he was there esp to the right of many holes on the front nine - this has been carried on dramatically by Bill Salinetti and the present powers to be
