Golf Digest 2013-14 State lists
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:30:49 PM »
I saw a thread on the Golf Digest top 100 list for 2013-14, but is there another list that has the state-by-state rankings?

Thanks.

Paul,

It's on the iPad edition with the other rankings.  Print version will be out soon I'm sure.

Paul,

Where do you put Chicago Highlands on your list of Illinois courses?  I would be surprised if 45 Digest guys have seen the place.

The Wisconsin rankings were interesting. Erin Hills was ranked ahead of MCC which would put it between 17 and 52 in the rankings overall if it were elligible (Whiten has a design credit). Also Lawsonia was not even ranked >:(

I thought their conflict-of-interest agreement was that anything Whitten was involved in was not eligible for any of their lists?

I don't want to speak for Ron but the course has undergone a couple major revisions.  The course, evidently, is dissimilar enough from the original that it came on our list.  At least that is my understanding.

Nigel,

It's on the public list, which means is has at least 30 but not 45 votes. The score is listed, so you can see with more precision where it would end up in the top 100.

Sorry I missed the asterisk. So EH would be 46 if it had enough votes. Wonder why GD could not get enough raters on a public course? Also I could not figure out why Greenbriar Old White was not on the 100+ list?

It isn't always easy to get 45 panelist visits especially for courses like the Old White that are out of the way. I live in DC and havent been there for years and I even have a home in the VA mts.  Erin Hills only recently came on our list to play so it hasn't had the play it might have gotten.

I find it hard to imagine Erin Hills not getting enough visits giving its proximity to Kohler and the Whitten connection.

Did the voting on it get reset after the most recent work?

Trying to stir the pot?  OK I'll bite.  I'd play 10 out of 10 rounds at Shoreacres, Skokie, Black Sheep, Beverly, North Shore, Flossmoor, Bob-o-Link and Knollwood over Rich Harvest.

Jud,

Then why did you play it in the first place?  We all know what is out there and that you would hate the course.

Because it was before most of us knew what was out there...  Even comparing it to Bulter or Medinah #3 it comes in a distant 3rd.

It's a serviceable list, with a few wacky entries. Here are five that I'd substitute for the outliers:

Edgewood Valley: a very good Bill Diddel design with only one or two suspect holes.
Exmoor:  not hard, but beguiling, fun and very solid.
Butterfield:  still haven't played the re-do but the old layout was better than eight on this list.
Glen Club:  big, brawny yet flexible with the multiple tees.  A better course than Conway.
Chicago Highlands: plenty of blah or goofy holes, but seven or so very solid holes and a bunch more great greens. No way it doesn't make the top 25.

Has anyone here actually has been to Canyata?  I have not and I am wondering what it is like.

Medinah #1 has no business being on this list.  IMO - Neither does Cantigny, Wynstone or Chicago Highlands.  With the current infestation of trees, I'm not sure Bob O'Link deserves to be there either.  And I can take or leave Merit Club as a golf course - great club though.

I'd sub in Onwentsia, Exmoor, Old Elm, Butterfield and even Glen Oak.

Knollwood is grossly underrated if you ask me.

To me the one clearly missing is Lake Barrington or Barrington Shores or whatever the hell the name is. Very cool greens and other stuff. Canyata and Rich Harvest and Conway are what they are for GD. For me, not so much.
That was one hellacious beaver.

I played Canyata on a beautiful day with a few Golf Digest raters when it first opened.  I love the place as I guess did they.

I love reading these things for free but could we please just pony up a buck and pay.  My soooooo favorite rater of all time was dismissed from a panel for releasing information before it was published.  I know if I ran a panel and saw my guys publishing my competitors information which hurts the industries already suffering profit model I would take away their card.  Be careful.

I really believe we could have got Paul to pay if he had asked the third time.
