You meet someone and after you find out his hometown your first question is, "Have you played X course?"
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.

...when a dear long-lost friend calls to treat you to a round at his local course and you find yourself thinking not "thank you" but "who designed it?"
All this study of gca is bound to make us a cold, heartless people in the end :)

When you not only know off the top of your head that John Kosydar designed the 2,200 yard par 33 nine-hole Scott Greens Golf Course in Montdale, PA in 1961 but also that Hank Gavlinski (regrettably) re-routed original holes 6, 7, & 8 in 1990 due to too many tee shots on 6 ending up in the parking lot of the Bamboo Room Banquet Hall to the left of the fairway.

...when you know Pebble Beach may not even break the top 5 for best designed courses on the peninsula. Views, history, etc... sure. But it lost its edge over the years.

When you meet someone from Minneapolis in a work setting, find out he plays golf, and then have a long discussion about courses there--even though you've never played golf in the state of Minnesota.
