Golf Digest's 2013-14 Top 100 Rankings
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:04:54 AM »
Golf Digest just unveiled their new Top 100 on the iPad.  Rather than typing out the entire list, it was easier for me to just update my website that contains the list.  Here it is:  http://golfcoursegurus.com/rankings/golfdigesttop100.php

New Courses in:  Gozzer Ranch, Pikewood National, Old Macdonald, Baltusrol (Upper), Quaker Ridge, Whispering Pines, Pete Dye Course at French Lick, Grandfather G&CC.

Course that are out:  East Lake, Eugene CC, Prince Course at Princeville, Ocean Forest, Sage Valley, Galloway National, Sycamore Hills, Shoreacres, Forest Dunes.

Since 101 courses made the list previously, there were only eight additions to compensate for the nine subtractions.

No Rock Creek.  Any one know if enough raters got up there?  Or if it isn't deemed good enough.

I do like that for the first time they added 101-200, similar to the next 100 that GW puts out.

I thought this list came out in September. Did market research recommend moving it to now to pump up sales for a slow month?

Where's Camargo, too?

On a personal note, playing outstanding Los Angeles CC this year and seeing it at 41st is a bit off.  Actually, more than a bit off IMO.

Ahhhhh, rankings  :)

The digital version of the issue is available for ipads, kindle, etc, free to existing subscriber.

I'd advise against posting the list publicly until they are publicly available on the GD website, but it looks like the cat is out of the bag.

Interestingly, they posted 101-200 as well.

Camargo is ranked #3 in Ohio but not listed on the top 100. It likely didn't get the required panelists to visit as it's positioned between The Golf Club and Scioto on the state rankings. That would put it between #36 and #52 on the top 100.

Has someone posted the 101-200 ranking anywhere yet?

I got 1 1/2 of the Top 100 (Pinehurst #2, front nine at Harbour Town)!

John Kavanaugh,

Congrats on continuing your online ragers while maintaining your in-person "greatest guy you've never met" persona.

Bill, thanks for the post...It was clear to me that you weren't trolling for hits/views.

Baltusrol Upper...have they had a sympathetic restoration to RTJ or something?

I've never heard of this course or the listed "architects"--45.  Pikewood National Golf Club (John Raese/Robert Gwynne 2008, Morgantown, WV).

Coming in pretty high at #45...

So you don't think it's tacky to publicly post information that is only currently available to paid subscribers?

Canyata at #38, ahead of Bandon Dunes, Sebonack and Pinehurst #2?

While there are plenty of gaps in my knowledge of U.S. golf courses, I cannot recall ever hearing or reading about this course. Can anyone clue me in?

Tim--

John Raese, one of the designers of Pikewood National is more known for running for the U. S. Senate from West Virginia than as a golf course designer.  Dow Finsterwald and I think Johnny Pott were involved in the design.  They were looking at trying to emulate some of the features they enjoy the most of their favorite courses.

The course at Pikewood National is simply outstanding.  It is a very thorough test of the game, long and quite difficult but I thought there were some really cool holes.  Personally, I liked the front which was built later better than the back.  The stretch from 3-8 is way cool.  The 4th has a "road" hole green set up, 5 has a great green setting, 6 is a dog left where a well played shot gets a sling shot effect that shortens the hole dramatically and the green is REALLY interesting, the 7th is par five with a creek splitting the fairway, and the 8th reminds me of 6 at Sunningdale New.  The conditioning is amazing, but not surprising given the relative lack of play, and it plays really firm and fast throughout.  I also liked the 11-13 stretch where you saw Ross type features, a nice take on a Redan, and something that looks straight out of the Flynn playbook and yet it all fits together nicely.  The shortest tee is 6750 yards, which makes it a bit much for most golfers, but there was nothing there that seemed excessive even though the bluegrass rough was tough. I just like the fact that they just carved the holes out of the forest without a whole lot of foo foo and fluff.  It's like, "here it is, go play it."  The corridors between tree lines are pretty narrow, but not excessively so.  I only visited the woods on my first tee shot.

And for the gca.com crowd, Pikewood is walking only.

Sancho Panza,

I'm not addressing the "tacky" aspect of what Ballena Bill did. I've read obvious attempts on this board to drive traffic to sites. I commented that I didn't think that Bill was doing that.

I've also never encountered such disparate behavior from any other poster. As regards the fellow, every GCA guy I know that has met him says "he is nothing in person like his online persona. he is the nicest fellow, most engaging, that you will meet." Since I haven't met him in person, I can only hope to rehab the online soul.

Ronald,

I did find it odd to link to the external site when a simple cut and paste would've put it up here for the world to see...

Ron,

I once contacted Sotheby's because a lot in one of their auctions had an unauthorized copy of The Confidential Guide attached.  They removed the lot from the auction and understood that it was nothing personal.   I'm sure Bill understands my comment was in the same light.  Hell, one of his guru's says that Victoria National is his favorite course.  He IS my hero.
