Oak Hollow in High Point, North Carolina
« on: December 15, 2012, 02:51:31 PM »
"Twas back in eighty-five or eighty-six, can't remember. The TPC was fairly new and Pete Dye was the talk of every town. I played Oak Hollow while a student at Wake Forest, mainly because Pete had designed it back in the early 1970s.

I did a quick search on this site and no threads popped up. Has anyone here played this course and what might you add to a discussion?

This is a flaw in the search function; Oak Hollow has been discussed many times.

I haven't played, it but my brother who lives in Greensboro has many times.  He likes it well enough, but doesn't consider it to be a must-play by any stretch. The two criticisms that one hears constantly really aren't GCA as much as management; very slow pace of play and often mediocre conditioning.

I have played it 15-20 times and really enjoy it. Lots of good quirk. There is a good amount of strategy, meaning some of the holes have different ways to play them so there is some thought involved. A.G. is correct that conditioning can be an issue but the value is fantastic. Usually greens fee and cart will run around $30!!!

I played in a 2 man scramble tournament back when I was in college. I liked it, and it is strategic and quirky - especially for the lower handicapper/long hitter.

Holes 6, 11, 14, 15 and 18 stand out to me. 10 is a true 3 shot par 5.

Played it a few months ago after not seeing it since the late 70's. A bunch of really neat, quirky holes, especially interesting for a public golf course. Biggest problem I saw is that the course is a poster child for needing tree management. Many of the holes are positively choked by trees, with a huge impact on both play and conditioning. I don't remember this being a problem back in it's earlier days, but as the trees have grown and thickened it's had a huge negative effect on the course.

I've played it twice, but that was about ten years ago (meaning I hit the ball about 100 yards shorter), but I liked the course a lot.  The holes along the lake are dynamite, there are some great short fours, and the greens are wild.  It's a great muni course, and Oak Hollow and Winston Lake constitute some of the best value I've seen for golf so far.

Ron, I can't believe we haven't discussed this course before.  Actually, thinking about it now, although the settings are completely different, Oak Hollow bears some resemblance to the best parts of Byrncliff (wild terrain, madcap stances, pulpit greens, wild contouring, etc.)

I am guessing you mean Reynolds Park, not Winston Lake.

Winston Lake is an acquired taste. When I was in law school in the early 80s we could play and ride at Winston Lake for $7! In those days the woods weren't thinned out and you could lose your egg very easily. Lots of blind shots at Winston Lake but back then it was in fine shape. Reynolds Park, a Maxwell design, is a lot of fun too. The new greens should be a huge improvement.
I drove by Oak Valley today on way home from S Pines. Used to play there in college. From the road you can see that deforesting would be a great idea.

Yes, definitely Winston Lake.  I haven't played Reynolds, but I've heard from reliable sources that Winston is the better course.

I loved Oak Hollow, it was/is a great value and had a lot of fun holes. It was a lot of fun finding value to golf in North Carolina when you were on a college budget.

I think Oak Hollow is definitely worth a play, but only if you're in the area.  As others have noted, it is a fun track, with quite a bit of quirk.  It's a great look at an early Pete Dye design, railroad ties and all.  The course is quite short (probably only 6400 from the back tees, par 72), and conditions can be spotty.  Though I've played it probably 2 dozen times, I can't remember every hole on the course (it's been at least 2 years since I've been there, and I'm not one of those guys who can remember every hole).  No. 1 is a short, fairly non-descript par 4.  No. 2 is a short (very short?) par 5.  It's easily reachable in two, but the green is tucked up on a knob, with a couple of trees and the angle of the green creating a challenge to get home in two.  The holes on the lake are strong, along with number 10, a lengthy (by Oak Hollow standards) par 5.  Some holes are too quirky for my taste, like number 8 or 9, which is a short par four, very up and down fairway, lined with railroad ties.  If you've never played it before you'll definitely hit your drive in the wrong place.  The landing area, up the right side is quite small.  Anything hit in the middle or left side falls off to oblivion.

As others have mentioned, it's a great value.  I've only played on weekdays, and during the week you can walk for about $12 or $15.

Well maybe I am a reliable or unreliable source, but Reynolds is far better.  Ellis Maples was a good designer and built Winston Lakes.  I enjoyed it the one time I played it.  Reynolds Park is a Perry Maxwell design and had/has some wonderful features.  It has been changed from Maxwell's original version and actually Ellis Maples did a good job on the 2nd, 8th and 9th.

They just replaced the greens (this summer) at Reynolds Park with Zoysia. RPGC is a fine place to play with a great gangsome. Some very nice par threes.
