If you've not played the Trump course, how have you developed an opinion regarding the appropriateness of its ranking?

Scott - its fair to think Golf World over rated an unopened course.

Sean - I'm a fan of Rye but find it hard to rate higher when the first is mundane, the tenth average and the eleventh positively poor. What is good is very very good.

It features as a non ranked "gem" on the www.top100golfcourses.co.uk website at the moment because it's really quite absurd to have a brand new course catapulted into the upper echelons of a national ranking chart weeks after it first opens - indeed it was in the Golf World Top 10 BEFORE it opened!!!

If it's okay for Ireland to rank its exclusive top-100 - why should it be obscure for the UK to have its own list? I'm a little surprised that I have played so many on the list but also surprised that I haven't heard of a few of the courses named. Some of my all-time favorite courses are in England (shock!)

Nah, I am not really a fan of RND, but its a good course - happy to play it if in the area.

Why exactly is Rye's 11th poor?  You Dealies keep saying this, but nobody seems to have sound reasons for their opinion.  I don't mind the hole even if ithe tee shot is a bit of a butt puckerer.  A good drive leaves a good birdie opportunity, but not a kick in by any means.  Not so different from Deal's 10th.  Both are Cape like drives with wee chippy approaches.  In fact, Rye's approach is arguably trickier.

Granted, I have been away from Deal a while, but when did they plant gorse left and dig a pond right on the 10th hole?! Really, it and the 11th at Rye are only similar in that they are much the same length.

Jim was saying he views Trump Int. to be overrated at #19 links in GB in the National Club Golfer list that this thread is about (not the list where it was top 10 before it opened).

Being that he hasn't played the course, that's ridiculous.

As for that fact it was named top 10 in GB&I before it was opened, you don't hear people pillorying The Confidential Guide because it awarded Sand Hills a 9 and made it Gourmet's Choice before it was even finished. Those who rated Trump at #10 in the Isles may be misguided, but they may also be absolutely on the money like Tom Doak was. Time will tell.

Let's just hope those who ultimately weigh in to decide the course's quality have played it.

Its sloppy enough with harsh rough that Deal's 10th may as well have a pond down the left - tee hee.  At least you recognize the strategy of each hole is virtually the same.

As I have told the Dealies many times, from the white tee, all can be seen on Rye's 11th.  I freely (and many times) admitted that from the yellow tee the hole is a dud not only because its blind but also because the cape effect of the water is reduced to more of a bowling alley tee shot.  I think the last time I was there, the yellow tee had been moved - don't recall because I am not daft enough to play the yellow tee.

Sean - the white tee is rarely open and I'm sure you wouldn't play off a closed tee? The fairway is impossible to define from the tee and there is random gorse to complicate matters. I note you haven't posted a tee shot picture. The pond to the right is the most important feature at Rye like it or loathe it, it secured the club's financial future. It's not a "Dealie" thing, most of us have the utmost respect for the club and it's members.

Agreed.   I have played several rounds at Rye and never seen the white tee at #11.

I can't help it if you flask swiggers fail to walk a few extra yards through the gorse to find the good tee.  Ace, you couldn't find an entire golf club, get a sat nav app on yer phone - tee hee. 

I do recall the tee situation being different the last time I was there in July or August, just can't remember the story.
