A hat day at North Berwick
« on: December 18, 2012, 04:28:28 PM »
Or rather, a hold on to your hat day! :)

How fortunate we are in this world to be able to experience a place such as North Berwick. Not only is the golf architecture off the charts but the buildings alongside the course are equally arresting. The town, the sea, the sun, the law, the people, and last but not least -- THE WIND! -- all contribute to a lasting impression I for one will always remember fondly.

To try to give you all a sense of what it is I am babbling about I've linked to a short video I took when walking from 17 green to the home hole. I suggest turning up your speakers for full effect! Enjoy.

Eric you are looooong. So what club did you select for 18?

Nice to see another GCA meber at 40 secs.

Anyone wh thinks N Berwick is "Easy" has not played 2,3 & 4 into a decent wind.

Thanks for posting.

Let's make GCA grate again!

Tony, I would say 'that's what she said' but then I would be telling a lie.

No, I was prepared to swing for the fences there at 18 as we had an enormous amount of wind at our backs. But then Simon said something about car windows and insurance tickets ??? so I reached in my pocket to be sure I was still in possession of my ticket and of course couldn't find it! Well now doubt had begun to creep in so all I could muster was a grandpa-ish bunt 2 wood towards the left hand side of the fairway. It rolled out quite a good ways though. Think I played the putter on the approach and putted off the back of the green. How similar are the finishing holes at NB and TOC?!

I think it was John Low who wrote:

I've played North Berwick in all sorts of conditions, including a gale nearly that strong. Please don't tell me you actually enjoyed it, because that is not golf, it is just survival. A two club breeze freshening off the water is about right.

Gib,

No question, there was an enormous sigh of relief when we turned to play down wind, but it was a lot of fun playing in both winds. Mostly because of the company, but also because it was my first visit to North Berwick. It didn't hurt either that it was one of the most glorious mornings imaginable. Yes, the wind was a roarin', but the sunshine was warm and plentiful and the golf course was firm and, as you well know, just such a joy to play.

Another brief video - this one shows a fellow GCAer's effort to play through the opening in the wall at the 13th green.

I played #3 with a decent group where EVERYONE hit the wall with his second shot!   Pretty funny......

I don't know what Gib is on about, that looks like some awesome fun!  That is exactly the sort of course made to be played in a stiff wind!!  Besides, it wasn't really all that windy because I saw a stand bag standing in that video.  When they won't stand no matter WHAT angle you try to set it at, then you know it is really windy.  I played in that kind of wind at Lahinch once.  That day might have been a bit too windy, or so I thought when I had to absolutely nut a 2 iron into the wind to reach the Dell ;)

As for 18....a 2W downwind?  C'mon Eric, I hit a 2 iron over the back when I played there without much of a wind at all!  OK, I was a decade younger then, but I would think with that wind it'd be a solid 5 or 6 iron for you!  You can ignore the cars like I did, as I seem to remember you played a lot like me - when you miss it wasn't which direction you missed, it was how far left you missed...

Awesome day, Eric.

It was very windy but not ridiculous.  Just great fun with great company, on the most fun course in the world. :)

I had forgotten that shot on 13.  That wasn't a gimmick shot by the way.  You will remember I was tight against the wall, just past the gap, so the old bang it off one side of the entrance into the other and trickle down was the only option!  I am still amazed it didn't get all the way down to the green; I've had words with the green staff to make sure that the surround is cut a little tighter just incase that shot ever presents itself again. ;)

In all my time playing here I have never had to do that before.  I've chipped and putted through a few times but not the ricochet shot!

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.
