Not that I was counting... or "The day I played #1500"
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:08:09 PM »
I have been meaning to post on here for a week or so, but have just been very tied up with things.  But tonight I found myself posting something else on here and had no excuse.

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to play my 1500th different golf course in my life.  I was excited earlier this year when my friend Cory Lewis talked about playing #1000 in his life at Pine Valley, and while I tried at one point to orchestrate a "Bucket List" type course for the milestone #1500 course I was not able to make that happen.  I was however able to make it happen on a wonderfully fun course in my home state of SC, Wexford down on Hilton Head Island.

My friend and playing partner that day Charles Warren on the 18th green as we finished up.  A nice lady who had just finished up ahead of us offered to take our picture when we putted out and finished.

Wexford was a blast!  And I was glad to share the milestone day with a good golfing friend.

I have been very fortunate, and God willing I hope my health holds up long enough, and my job continues to allow me to travel extensively enough that someday I might hit that milestone of #2000.  But that may be a while because it is getting harder and harder to find a course I havent played within a couple hundred miles of where I live as I travel.  I have stumbled across some great gems I would have never otherwise seen, met some interesting Mom & Pop operations playing some of the little places along the back roads in the Carolinas as I play anything I drive by that I have not previously played.  Many of these rounds have been with people I have met on here, and I appreciate the great friendships I have made as well as the numerous golf courses I have seen that I otherwise wouldnt have.

As an engineer I am naturally anal enough that I was tracking places I played in a spreadsheet already and hadnt really thought I was specifically trying to play different courses to hit any milestone.  In fact I couldnt tell you when or where I played #1000, I guess I was just oblivious at that point.  I just liked seeing as many different courses as I could, but when I got close to 1500 I certainly started thinking about it more.

Again if I played with you along the way, thanks!  If I haven't played with you yet, I am ready, willing, and hopefully still able...  Bring on the next 500...

I still quite fondly recall walking Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta on that sweltering hot day when no one would believe that the two of us were going to walk in that heat.  Especially two guys with the combined mass that we had!   I think their concern was primarily a liability one.  How many times did someone come out to check up on us and offer us a cart, cool towel, ice water, or all three?

lets knock off a few more in the coming years!

Daryl do you notice that you always play with people shorter than you are?  Charley looks good and since he retired doesn't ever seem to be home.  Last yearI counted the scorecards I keep and have played 1200.  I guess I am just a piker.  See you next week.

You guys just need to buy a new driver or try a different ball and then maybe you wouldnt be shorter than me...  That is what you meant right?

I am looking forward to next week as well, we are set for Thursday and Friday I think, still working out the details on Wed.  I have to leave you guys Friday when we are done and drive back home as I have to go to a wedding on Sat.   Unfortunately only probably 1 new course for me in the rotation next week.  BTW I heard that Sugarloaf Mountain north of Orlando is closed now, that is too bad.

We played the Country Club of Columbus in Georgia. A Ross course restored by Arthur Hills. It was on my way back to Auburn and you didn't plan on joining me but couldn't help yourself.  I do not recall if we played the course my cabin overlooks or not. It is Lawrence County CC.

Thats right, I could picture it, but I couldnt remember where in Western GA we were.   And according to my spreadsheet I have not played Lawrence County CC so we need to make that happen.  As I recall we got there pretty late in the evening, and that is why we didnt play.

While I don't think you and Barney played in the same foursome, you did attend the Cuscowilla- Athens CC event together.

That is quite a monumental number of different golf courses.  To imagine playing a different course every single day for over 4 years is staggering.  To add to that the number of repeat multiple rounds at some of those courses, and your home course dance card... well you must be about 96 years old now!   ;D
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Well done Turboe!

My # is ~300 and since I only add 5-15 new ones each year I am unlikely to ever challenge your feat.  I wonder how Mike Cirba (GCANLE) is doing?  Seems to me that he had a ridiculously high # several years ago.

PS--we are talking about golf course #s, aren't we....?

PPS--I think that you, Barney and JD are triplets separated at birth.

My goodness, it's hard to get my mind around the concept of 1,500 courses. Off the top of my head, I'd estimate that some time during our round at Musgrove Mill would have been the 1,500th different golf hole I've played in my life!

That explains it, I was wondering why I feel 96 years old some mornings!

I got a late start not being a golfer as a kid, but once I got going after college I made up for lost time.  There was a 12 year window there when I was still single, and traveling all the time for work that I played 100 different courses a year for 12 straight years.  That knocked off a lot of the 1500 right there.

And dont remind me that the rounds at my home club are staggeringly low some years, but when I am home now the weekends are quite full of family stuff so weekend golf is not as prevalent as it used to be.  Hopefully my wife doesn't ever amortize my cost per round there...

And yes you are correct about Cuscowilla, that was where I met Barney, but I did not get to play with him at all.  Thanks for helping to jog this 96 yr old's memory.

I sort of thought that might have been what Gib was referring to, but I thought it ironic seeing as how Tommy had just commented on my height over most of my playing partners.

Congrats!  I remember when you hit 1000.  You are a machine!

I will get you out on a course here in the Triad that you haven't played next time you are around.  Sorry the Ladies "Jingle Bell" tournament messed that up this week.

Missing AK & MT in the states, unfortunately I am embarrassed to say I am missing a bunch of Canadian Provinces but I hope to knock a couple of those off next summer.  If work trips cooperate.
