Royal Portrush, Peter Dawson and The Open
« on: December 07, 2012, 01:41:10 PM »
Peter Dawson January this year.

“I enjoyed my visit. It’s a great golf course,” he enthuses. “But it hasn’t had the ‘treatment’ that other Open courses have had and some of that would be required. One or two holes need some changes. And there are layout issues. It’s not obvious where the practice ground would go, for example. Or where the tented village could be sited. "

i.e. if you want The Open we've gotta change it.

Paul,

Passing along this footage from the R&A's site visit in case you missed it. A little foggy but yes that indeed is Dawson at the 17-second mark.

Cheers!

I hope they never get to muck around with Portrush, I'd bet a quirky hole like Purgatory would be a gonna.

The quote shows an attitude of we know best. "Treatment" is "required".

He's not 100% accurate once again. MacKenzie and Ebert did work there in 2008.  At the time they seemed to be the R&A/Dawson favourites.  I wonder if they've since called in the Dr?

Let's make GCA grate again!

There's a very good course right next door, the Valley, where the tented village and practice ground could certainly be located.  Most of that ground is, however, pretty humpty bumpty.
