Why John Huggan Is Golf Writing's Chuck Norris
« on: December 02, 2012, 07:02:32 PM »
From here (http://www.scotsman.com/scotland-on-sunday/sport/golf/john-huggan-sacrilege-at-st-andrews-1-2671304) we retrieve these baguettes:

"With an act of staggering arrogance, they have apparently deemed themselves better qualified than Mother Nature – which, in the case of the all-male R&A at least, is just another example of their rampant misogyny – when it comes to knowing what is best for golf’s shrine."

"the R&A’s chief executive, Peter Dawson, trotted out the hoary old line that the Old Course just isn’t tough enough to challenge the very best players and their massive tee shots."  He used the word 'hoary'!!!

"from a newly constructed tee in a nearby field." That's right, they stuck a tee out on the practice grounds.

"Good luck, by the way, to rules officials everywhere when it comes to determining whether or not a player “intended” to anchor his putter or not)."  You know, I was always taught that the period stayed inside the parentheses...

Tell Ron that John Huggan is a very brave man and goo voice for Scottish golf.  I have not always agreed with him, he's often hard on St. Andrews, but this time he's dead on correct!   Vive le Huggan libre! or something like that.

I'm a big fan of Huggan's but actually the piece disappoints.  That quote above is clearly intended to be a joke but actually comes off as a cheap shot not relevant to the changes.  Could not understand the McIroy simile at all.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Stan, RoMo, Ron,

I believe John Huggan dashed his piece off, 3-4 days ago, whilst sweltering in the heat of Melbourne's hottest night on record since 1901 with the temperature at 27 degrees Celsius around midnight and only falling to a cool 24.6C a few hours later. Compare this to the cooler climes of bonny Scotland where the average temperature at this time of year is 1degC - 6 degC and therein may lie a reason for what you consider was an addled piece of writing. Poor John was, by all accounts, sweating on this piece!

Just out of interest were these "… baguettes." you found considered by you to be crusty writing or just mere bagatelles!

Cheers Colin

Thanks Stan.

It's nice to see a journalist who loves golf and The Old Course plant his feet firmly and make a stand. A rare breed.

QUOTE
Peter Dawson, trotted out the hoary old line that the Old Course just isn’t tough enough to challenge the very best players and their massive tee shots. “The Championship Committee felt there was an opportunity to stiffen its defences in some places to ensure it remains as challenging as ever to the professionals,”
END QUOTE

Why are courses having difficulty standing up to modern technology? The ball... and this is something only the R&A and USGA can do something about. Instead they have done nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada. And instead of doing something about the sphere, they dig up sacred ground.

We're well on the way to the 8,000 yard "Championship" course.

John Huggan is now the Jeremy Clarkson of golf journalism. There to entertain but not to take literally or too seriously.

I like what he wrote. To be Chuck Norris, for those on the other side of the Atlantic, is to be invincible.

When Chuck was in middle school, his English teacher assigned an essay: "What is courage?" Chuck received an A+ for turning in a blank page with only his name at the top.

Chuck Norris doesn't play "hide-and-seek." He plays "hide-and-pray-I-don't-find-you."

Chuck Norris can hear sign language.

Death once had a near-Chuck-Norris experience.

Leading hand sanitizers claim they can kill 99.9 percent of germs. Chuck Norris can kill 100 percent of whatever the hell he wants.

Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one bird.

There are a million of 'em. All fit John Huggan to a T. Or something.
