St. Andrews and Change.org (400+ Signatures in 48hrs)
« on: November 27, 2012, 12:53:57 AM »
I've started a petition on Change.org to stop the proposed changes. Your help is always appreciated if you agree with this cause.

If you can edit the blurb, it's Peter Thomson, not Thompson.

Emile,

I find your idea exemplary.
Are you coordinating this with Tom doak?

Cheers

 Emile I’m with you but…

In 2009 I was horrified that they were adding tee’s off the Old Course and tried to organise a petition on here, to be presented during the following years Open at St Andrews.  I gathered little support either because I made a poor case (which seemed self evident to me) or, as I strongly suspect, I have no leadership role within the industry.

Can I ask that you take down your petition for now?  For this to work I think we need

1
To discuss what the petition should say.  Yours seeks to stop work that has already started.  The work will have finished before you get any significant amount of support.  It really doesn’t tackle the larger issue of how St Andrews should be protected.

2
When the real petition gets going the first 10/50 names need to be household figures from the world of golf.  Without that it’s dead in the water.  I’m watching Tom Doak’s posts with great interest, hopefully he can get this ball rolling, very quickly..

I think even if you gather hundreds of names it will not be enough and it will make the signator's think I’ve already signed one.

Sorry but I think yours is a well meaning distraction.
Need to hone your frustrations into a more effective tool.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Emile,

While I applaud your  effort, the die is cast,

The response Neil received was a polite brush off.

They're going ahead with the work and nobody is going to change their mind.

Pat,

The proposed work is scheduled to take place over the next two winters.  If enough of a fuss is made, and the work being carried out now is poor, thit is possible  that next winter's work will be stopped.

Although I would be very wary of accepting a bet framed by you without a lawyer going over the wording. ;D

I agree Patrick, there's no stopping the work and I think the course willl never be restored back.

The Hawtree work will be done reasonably well, the pros and the locals won't complain and almost everyone will gradually forget about it.

The most recent signatory of the petition:

One Gordon K M Murray - Long time caddy at TOC.  Great to see this issue gaining some resonance in the town. Gets plenty of ink in Pepper's book and was also in a Doco back in 2007 shot at TOC.

That is quite relevant as he is nothing if not vocal.
Evidently, not ALL the locals were clamoring for change, although they were used to provide a convenient vehicle for those justifying their actions.
(you can always find someone who doesn't like something about their local course, particularly if it's quirky)
