Aerial of the Day #379 (and 380) - 25 Jul 2003
« on: July 25, 2003, 09:34:11 AM »
When this place opened, many players thought those who
built it were smokin' something funny.

For the stumper today, this one was sent to me, and by
someone who has some interest in the course in some way.
Like DNGC and NNGC this week, this one is brutally tough
from the tips.

Actually #1 today is no slouch, either.

#1:  "Amapola, lindisima amapola", as played by the archies bandleader cousin, Spike? ::)

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

#1 had some awfully big shoes to fill when it "replaced" a nearby neighbor in 1991. . . .

#1 can cause personal problems with your score, just like a
failed drug test for eating too many muffins. (YAPCR alert) :P

Red-headed stepchild of a phone company rotation?

#2 has a tree-mendous name, main part same as previous
AOTD also from the midwest.

From a place of tornadic dreams?

Where does this design rate in the archie's design span, who
shares something in common with Elyse Keaton?

#1:

Opium Knolls?

Seeds from here go well in dressings and muffins.

#2:

A number of you will meet the architect in person in
September after playing another of his enchanting designs.

Co/signature-archie/Champions Tour player (known for his
hat) assisted on another course bearing his name with one of
our own practicing GCA-posting architects.

First round co-leader of Sr. British Open hails from these parts.

Upon further review, CR and slope are exactly the same here
as yesterday's AOTD (from tips).

#1:

Huckaby will probably be mad I did this one while he's gone, since it's the home course to the regional golf section he rates courses for.  First course in the U.S. to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association.

Softened a bit since it first opened, I believe.

#2:

In area of midwest BBQ home

archie works with Finger and Dye.

#1 is Poppy Hills, in Pebble Beach, CA, designed by RTJ, Jr.
PH is the 3rd course in the AT&T Pro-Am rotation, replacing
venerable Cypress Point in 1991.

Here is the layout:

from the web site, which has a few pics:

http://www.poppyhillsgolf.com/pebblebeach/index.htm

other clues include:

"smokin' something funny", "Smoking plant or flower
derivative", "failed drug test", "opium" all refer to
the "poppy" plant, where opium comes from (and
poppyseeds)

'Opium Knolls" = poppy hills

"Seeds from here go well in dressings and muffins."
= "poppyseed"

"failed drug test for eating too many muffins. (YAPCR alert) "
refers to when Elaine on Seinfeld was accused of opium-
smoking when she failed her work drug test from eating too
many poppyseed muffins.

"Red-headed stepchild of a phone company rotation" =
maligned replacenemt for Cypress at AT&T, who wouldn't?

something about Spike Jonze, Dick?

#2 is Sycamore Ridge, in Spring Hill (outside KC), KS,
designed by Baxter Spann and assisted by Jim Colbert.

This sent to me by Mike Nuzzo, who does work for Baxter,
Dye, Spann.

The layout is here:

from the web site:

http://www.sycamoreridgegolf.com/

other clues include:

"DNGC and NNGC this week, this one is brutally tough
from the tips", "CR and slope are exactly the same here
as yesterday's AOTD (from tips)" = both are 76.2, 150.

"tree-mendous name, main part same as previous
AOTD also from the midwest." = "sycamore" (Hills was
previous AOTD)

"From a place of tornadic dreams" = "We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto"

"span" and "who shares something in common with Elyse
Keaton" refers to "Family Ties" actress Meredith "Baxter".

"A number of you will meet the architect in person in
September after playing another of his 'enchanting' designs."
refers to official GCA outing in Land of Enchantment, New
Mexico, in September at Spann's Black Mesa, where Spann
will be present.

"Co/signature-archie/Champions Tour player (known for his
hat) assisted on another course bearing his name with one of
our own practicing GCA-posting architects." =refers to
Colbert, who partnered with Jeff Brauer at Colbert Hills, also in KS.

"First round co-leader of Sr. British Open hails from these
parts" = Tom Watson, KC native.

"In area of midwest BBQ home" = Kansas City

"archie works with Finger and Dye"

I forgot to mention that I'll be on vacation next week
(meeting a few of you, too), so hopefully AOTD will return on Aug 4.
