Great rivalries
« on: November 26, 2012, 01:11:47 PM »
There was an article in the Times today about my high school Neville in Monroe, Louisiana and one of the great moments in american high school football history. We are coming to an end of the college football season over the next month. I started thinking what golf clubs have historic rivalries with other clubs settled on the course. I am hoping this will turn to architecture as part of the discussion. Olympic Club and MPCC both have numerous interclub matches. I was just getting to the age and place in life to be a part of this when my current health issues got in the way. Do any clubs have heated matches that the clubs really look forward to and make a big deal of winning?

Or more to our point, how about gca rivalries?  The biggest might be all of the Jones boys and father against each other, no?

I suppose there is rivalries among all the bigs, back when they were splitting up the best projects regularly - JN, TF, Pete Dye, etc.  Always good natured when there was enough work to go around.......

I was invited to play for my club in a match against The Minikahda Club this past fall. We play for the Twin Cities Cup (one club is in St. Paul, the other Minneapolis). The matches date back to 1899. It's a home-and-home series held over a Friday and Saturday afternoon in late September. The Friday afternoon round consists of nine holes of best ball & nine holes of alternate shot for a point each followed by cocktails and a "draft" to decide the next day's matches. Saturday is one-on-one match play followed by cocktails and dinner with spouses. Everyone certainly wants to win and the matches are competitive, but ultimately it's a fun annual event that people hope they get invited to participate in.

Jeff,

I would think that RTJ and Dick Wilson in the 1950's would be near the top of the charts.  I also know that Mr. von Hagge used to get really jacked up when he was successful against Jones or Nicklaus (usually in Europe or Mexico).  However the greatest gca rivalry I know of had to be Dan Ganesh against Derek Hanks ;D ;D.

Hope all is well with you and business is good.

Don't know about that one, Mark. But there is a very cool Banks Cup played every year between Essex County, Forsgate, Rock Spring and Hackensack. 8 players, back tees, medal play with best 6 scores counting. Superb way to celebrate our shared architecural history.

We also play a four way with Ridgewood, Arcola, Knickerbocker and Hackensack. 8 players each playing 3 point match play against the other clubs. Probably the most competitive rivalry.

But the coolest may be the Hoffman Cup, named after famed sports writer Red Hoffman, which includes 24 clubs in North Jersey. Broken up into 6 divisions, each club playing 3 matches (each match has two positions home, two away), then the division winners advance to finals. Not really a rivalry, but a great way to enjoy a wide variety of architecture.

A friend of mine was telling me about the Banks Cup earlier this year as his brother plays out of Rock Spring.  It sounds pretty cool!

Jud, I know that you are upset, but does every thread on page 1 have to deal with what is happening to the Old Course? :)

I wish someone would post about the Macdonald Cup. I believe it is contested every year between NGLA, Chicago, Sleepy Hollow and Piping Rock. Not sure if St. Louis or others are involved.

Maybe not a 'great' rivalry but the oldest one goes back 121 years and is the precursor of all international matches.

I think Simon Holt played in the 2000 match.
