I am playing every course in your recommendation plus Redlands Mesa, both Red Sky courses, Summit, Breckenridge, Sanctuary,Castle Pines and Cherry Hills.

What do you know about Rio Grande, Bear Dance and Fossil Trace. I got room for one.

My wife loves golf as much as I do.  She's a 9 handicap, plays quick, and has a sharp wit.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

If you happen to venture to Larkspur (right off I-25) you should stop and play Bear Dance. I believe it's the best public course in Colorado -- the demands off the tee and on the greens are beyond just about all of what you find in The Centennial State. Some folks though believe the greens at Bear Dance are a bit toooooo severe. One good thing -- there's been some stretching of the tees on a few holes so getting an updated report will be really helpful.

Fossil Trace is going to open very, very soon. It's a well doen muni by Jim Engh -- the only silly hole ios the short par-3 5th which has zero, goose-egg worth of character. It just sits there and does nothing. On the flip side -- the starting four holes are very good and the entire back side is a testament to Engh's abilitty to get the most out of a tight land area.

I have not played Rio Grande but bear in mind the ride to South Fork isn't exactly on the beaten track. Adam Clayman has played it and things well of it. The countryside is sure beautiful but I don't know if the course has the depth to be more than just a pretty picture as is the case with a good deal of the Colorado courses I've played.

Enjoy your trip and I'd be most interested in your opinion and that of your wife on the courses you play from New Mexico -- they are quite good and worthy of your time and $$ IMHO.

A mountain course is one like The Cliffs at Glassy or the Gatlinburg Country Club, where the owner and/or developer says, "I think I'll build a golf course on this mountain."  Grandfather G & CC's par 3 course is close.  Mountain Aire is close.

Wade Hampton is a slam dunk. Too bad most people won't get to play it.

Steve C:

Don't doubt that Wade Hampton is a fine track but ti's more often more wetter than most other courses and that can be a real pain if one is expecting anything close to firm'n fast conditions.

One last thought -- Mountain Air in Burnsville (NC) is a really neat Scott Pool design -- the only issue is the maximum shot distortion you get with all the elevation changes.

Mountain golf in the east is very different than mountain golf in the west. One other layout worth mentioning is the Balsams (Panorama Course) in Dixville Notch, NH. Very good Donald Ross design and usually gets little attention because of its remote location.

Heading out to Champion Hills and Wade Hampton in a week. I would agree that Wade Hampton has a moisture problem, but the shot values and scenery are great. Champion Hills doesn't have the moisture problem, but has a couple quirky holes. Both are always in superb shape. Wade's par 3's are exceptional. jjs

Best Mountain course I have ever played is Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, NC. A truly GREAT course.

NM
Paa-Ko Ridge (great layout)
CO
Raven @ Three Peaks (FUN!!! Great bunkering)
Pole Creek (solid design/stunning views)
Cotton Ranch Club (tough)
Taos CC (those in the know...)
Hiwan CC (quickest greens in CO)
Bear Dance (the foothills...)

Just a few. Typically, CO Mountain Golf is eye-candy, though there is a time and place for all. Still, the above courses are a solid entree. ;D

Ben and Doug.  I consider both Capilano and Kapalua as mountain courses.  Both are located on the lower slopes of fairly substantial hills/mountains and the mountain scenery playes a major role in framing the courses.  There is substantial elevation change on both courses.  If not mountain courses, how would they better be described?
