A few lost copies of The Confidential Guide ... are now GONE!
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:50:41 PM »
the private edition, c. 1994, turned up on my doorstep yesterday.  They had been sitting in boxes in my ex-wife's garage for the last 13 years, still with the wrappers on them and good as new.

We've decided that the best course of action is to sell them and donate the money to charity.  So, if anyone is interested in purchasing one, there are 25 of them to sell, at the original price of $100 each.  Hopefully the collectors' market has taken note of the forthcoming new edition of the Guide and the price has come down to something like this ... if not, maybe it will now.

I've received more than 40 emails regarding the books, so I have to cut off the sale.  Hope we can accommodate all requests.

Tom

You have my email winging its way to you. I don't have a copy of the book and indeed not sure that I've ever had the chance to read it but more than happy to take you up on your offer. As I said in my email if you bring it over with you on Sunday I'll gladly pay you the posting and packaging cost for charity  ;D

I too have sent an email.  Thanks for doing this!

Whoa!  That's 25 emails about the book in 35 minutes.  Guess I will have to cut it off there, for now.  I'm told there may be another box but my son will have to dig it out to see if the books are ok.  I will be back to this thread if there are in fact a few more books; but PLEASE don't flood my in box in the meantime!

Sorry Tom.  I popped off an email before reading to the end of the thread.  I'm embarrassed that I don't have a copy yet.  But I've got plenty of friends I can borrow from.

Ach! The tyranny of distance. However if there is a spare copy (fat chance) please bear me in mind.

Email me at doakgolf@aol.com if interested, and I will provide instructions on how to purchase a copy.  Not sure if I can get them out in time for Christmas or not, as I am leaving for Scotland and China on Sunday, and won't be back until December 13th.

I wonder how many people in the history of Earth have described their upcoming itinerary as "Scotland and China."

Enjoy your trip!

D'oh! Sorry Tom, didn't read the whole thread before firing off my e-mail.

This was WAY more popular than those "doorbuster" sales this morning!

I have one forsale
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

 :'( :'( :'(

Hey Tom , if you find another box keep me on the list. Lost my whole first floor in the hurricane here at the shore  and just today was trying to dry out my signed copy.  Its disheartening as just realized that almost all my golf books are trashed , many signed .  Amazing how weeks after the storm you keep finding more  damage.  My heart goes out to all those less fortunate than my wife and I, who just lost possessions.

Water and mud destroys everything ,  somehow my bookcases got penetrated and now I've got to reboot .  Must have lost 75 wonderful books, Tom's was one of my faves. It really sparked my love of golf architecture and helped me conceptualize Twisted Dune. For anyone here who hasn't read it, the detail in the Confidential Guide , and the breadth of the research is quite impressive.

Now here's where I'm blessed. When we opened up the bookcases  and saw the mold and water had destroyed all our wedding pictures, my wife's grade school and high school albums , etc etc  she  was more upset about my losing my golf library , knowing it will be impossible to replace all my Pine Valley notes and signatures.

I told her Ill have to start looping again , and she said they wouldn't have me , LOL !

Archie-

Know the deal down there--our first floor of our house in Beach Haven is 100% trashed.

I think I may be in the first 25 as my email wasn't but 15 mins or so from the announcement post.  If it was--Tom, please move Archie into my spot.  I have a copy on my bookshelf already.

Jason-Classy move and good karma coming your way! Knowing the kind of guy Archie is I'm sure he would do the same. Hope for both of you guys that things get turned around quick down the shore.
