And here's the deal Ivan L, talented or not:

A beginner shoots 95, thinks he is a rare talent and follows up with 110. He is humbled.
I shoot 72-87 and am humbled.
Ivan M shoots 67-82 and is humbled.
Rory, Tiger or any of the big boys shoots 62-77 and is humbled.

In short, we never escape the humbling effects of golf on our lives, whether first discovering the game or being at the top of the pile. It's all about the journey, not the destination.
In the places where golf cuts through pretension and elitism, it thrives and will continue to thrive because the simple virtues of the game and its attendant culture are allowed to be most apparent. - Tim Gavrich

Golf has given me more than I will ever get back from it.  It gave me a job when I needed one.  It gave me the ability to understand that people from the other side of the tracks were also people too.  I learned that just because you are famous you can still be an a-hole.  It gave me a college education.  The game gave me a sport I can play all my life.
The only way of really finding out a man's true character is to play golf with him. In no other walk of life does the cloven hoof so quickly display itself.

To the other Ivan the Terrible - Did you never hear of the 'humbling game?' Any humility I can ever muster was learnt on the golf course. Whenever I get cocky, it doesn't take long before I am slapped down and 'put in my box.' Would you believe being 7-up and seven to go in an important championship match - only to stagger home 1-up? How humbling was that? Scoring 67-82 back to back in the Irish National Championship was a pretty humbling experience that was the product of an undoubtedly bewitching game and a dose of over-confidence.
;-))))

Ivan Lipko: what about Peter the Great?  Any humility there?  I just read a biography.  No reference to his golf game.  What humbled him?  If anything?  Other than, maybe, the Pruth campaign.

Hi, Carl! Hope all is good in Charlotte.

I am not really sure there was much if any humility in this man. He seems to be a zealous bigot. Altough, it is tough to deny his positive impact in some spheres of Russian socio-economical life, he failed to make the most significant change - bring golf to the country.  ;D

Golf has given me 2 back surgeries, 1 each wrist and shoulder surgery and a lifetime of great memories
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Gave me joy and purpose when there wasn't much of it in my life.

Good for my ego.... it's one of the few things I was, and still is, really any good at.

I hope when my second son is born healthy in a few months and when he and his older brother are old enough it will be something I can share with them.

Bart...

I've hesitated thus far to say this, as I don't want to embarrass you.

But, I've mentioned golf has brought me some good friends.  On that list of friends, you are near the tipity-top of that list.  One of my beliefs in life is that if you surround yourself with good people, good things will happen.  Bart, any chance I have to hang out with you...I will take it.  Because being around a person with your quality of character can only lead to good things.  As you are one of the best people I've ever met in my life.  No joke.  Thanks for being you!

Mac:

Someone has broken into your account and is typing nonsense.

Thank you, my friend.  Same goes.
