I played Sunday and today at a club in Minnesota that remained open after previously thinking it was going to be closed.

It was pretty bare bones and, because of that, there were no tee markers on the course.

It was fun. I don't know that I'd want it like that all the time, but I liked the change of pace.

At Cal Club they have the same markers on every box, (they are all the same color) which can be confusing, especially for a first time player:)  There's also a few hidden boxes there too, so you really have to watch out to see your playing the right box:0  Great course, though!

The Dunes Club, in Michigan, does not have tee markers. The members prefer match play and whomever wins the hole you gets to choose spot where you tee off next.

Then how are the holes, individually and collectively handicapped ?

Certainly a 20 handicap isn't going to play a 7 handicap without shots.

Wouldn't varying where one tees it up affect where the strokes would fall ?

I'd consider plaques in the tees as being practically equivalent to tee markers.
The course is probably rated and the hole's handicap probably determined from those plaques.
