Musgrove Mill tomorrow anyone?
« on: November 20, 2012, 07:06:07 PM »
Mr. Hutto or Mr. Whittaker, or anyone else for that matter...

69 degrees forecast tomorrow. The greens are perfect, and I have two open spots on a 10am tee time tomorrow.   Anyone interested?

Turboe!

Darn, wish I was there to join in.

Spent the weekend down in Beaufort but am back in NJ now.

Daryl, I'm still waiting to see if my pro shop in NJ can get the Jumbomax grips. Watch out!

Have fun at Musgrove!

Very kind of you to offer.  Am playing in DC today -- high of 58.  Trying to figure out a way to sneak out Friday as well -- would require ditching my family and mom. . . .

Hey Daryl, at Ballyhack for a couple of days. 65 and sunny up here.  See you next month.

Turns out the peripatetic Mike Whitaker was able to join in at the last moment and round out our foursome at Musgrove Mill. My first time seeing the course and man, is it a hoot. The first hole has more going on from tee to green than some courses manage on the whole front nine. And the interest continues throughout the round. What a fun place to play golf.

I will quibble about the 18th hole which frankly, I did not care much for. The entire course is challenging but the closing hole is the only one that in my opinion caters only to the stronger player. But so many of the holes out there are perfectly playable for a short hitting bogey golfer like myself while being all that a good player would care to handle. That's a sign of a fine, fine golf course in my book.

Thanks for the invite, Daryl. A perfect day.

Brent, what would you change about 18?  It seems that a second shot to the right of the green is a safe play for a bogey.

My problem is that the parts of the fairway I could reach with a 6-iron or 5-iron (after hitting a somewhat decent tee shot down the left edge of the fairway) are narrow, rippling and slope toward the water hazard. To reach the wide bailout area short and right of the green and take the narrow part out of play I'd have to hit a 170-yard or so layup shot. For me that's a 4-hybrid or 7-wood shot.

So I tried twice once to hit a 6-iron which would need to hit the narrowest part of the fairway. Went in the hazard. Second time tried to reach the bailout area short-right with a 5-iron. Came up short in the hazard again.

Maybe my tee shot was a lot shorter than I thought it was. But the hole seemed to me like driver, fairly precise hybrid/fairway wood and then if the second shot ends up safe still a wedge or chip onto the green.

If the fairway out around 75-100 yards were slightly wider and slightly less sloped toward the hazard it would be a hole a player like me could just play for a five. But unless on my next visit my tee shot goes 10-15 yards farther, it's a very hard five.

18th approach plays about a club longer at Musgrove than the measured yardage on the sprinkler heads.

The 6th is my favorite hole.

Approach shot!!!

Seeing that white dormant bermuda kind've startles me.(how quickly I forget)
Here in New York right now the cool season grass is electric green despite the irrigation being off for weeks and hardly used at all for months.

Looks like a good time

The shorter fairway grass is still a little green hue, but the rough like we are standing in is all dormant color.  If you look way in the distance at the par 5 green you can see that the bent grass greens are loving this temperature.

The fairways and roughs at my club in Columbia are still a week or so "greener" than at Musgrove but on both courses it's nice when this time of year rolls around because dormant Bermuda IMO looks beautiful and makes a very golfer-friendly playing surface.

The putting greens were amazingly true and while the ball would still make a noticeable mark on an approach shot, they were firm enough that some roll-out must be accounted for. That Bent grass is kind of like myself. It's thinking "Now this is why I live in South Carolina, Octobers and Novembers are awesome!".

Makes living here in the summer almost worthwhile.

Fall in the south, particularly on nonoverseeded turf, is awesome.
The most amazing thing is how few people play at that time of year.

I know I am always amazed how everyone seems to stay home once their yards go brown, but this is always some of the best golf of the entire year.  Temps in the Mid 60s to 70, firm and fast (until the winter rains set in too much) and greens rolling as good as they get all year!!!  Whats not to love...
