McRaynorBanks in Philly area....Why not?
« on: November 20, 2012, 01:19:14 PM »
Why did these three heavyweights not really do much in the Philadephia area at all?  Am I missing something?

Mark:

Having lived in both towns (NYC and Philly), there's more credence to the theory that the Philadelphians wanted to hire their own than the New Yorkers not wanting to venture Southwest.  There's a tremendous amount of little brother syndrome that flows from the shores of the Delaware River.  And I say this as an Eagles fan.

Mark,

Just a reminder that Raynor did Elkridge Club in Baltimore and MacRaynor did the 9 hole Gibson Island:

Thanks for the heads up on the Baltimore area Mike.  I never heard of Gibson Island, but it looks pretty neat!  Does anyone have pictures of it??

Mark,

Take a trip to Pittsburgh:

http://www.foxchapelgolfclub.org/Guest-Golf.aspx

I think "The Philadelphia School" conspired to persuade clubs not to hire MacRaynorBanks in violation of the  Anti-Trust laws.

Raynor worked in lots of cities, just never around Philadelphia.  Or Boston, either, come to think of it.

What industrial wealth rose out of Boston, and/or PA?

Compared to NY, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Ohio.....

Industrial wealth in Phila or PA? How about railroads & coal, for starters?

Maybe in the aggregate. The Pennsylvania Railroad was a massive wealth generator(largest capitalized corporation at one time I believe), and institutions like UPENN certainly did not suffer in comparison.

I forgot steel and agriculture in PA

Of course, nothing is greater than NY. It's the $ capital of the world.

What's the purpose of this comparison? Wealth is wealth and there was enough of it to go around in the "Golden Age" for courses to be built all across the country.

I think the Philadelphia School oligopoly had a lot to do with it.  But the question becomes much deeper when you realize that non-Philly School guys such as Ross, Perry Maxwell, and Willie Park Jr. were able to get some work in the region.

Are you sure about that?  I think you might want to read up on why Philadelphia was known as the "Workshop of the World."  New York may have been a wealthier city (it was the center of trade and commerce), but Philadelphia was the center of this country's industrial activity for a long time.
