If Dan Hixson grew up 20 minutes south of Eugene, then he probably grew up in the exact city this is going to be built in. Creswell is also the site of Emerald Valley which is a quality course. The Fazio signing has the smell of Nike all over it.

I love the smell of freshly cut swoosh in the morning!

I like the way the property looks, even if it is quite flat.  I love oak dotted meadows, and one article says they have a creek, too.

To answer Gray's question, I think $25 million is too much money.  It encourages an overly elaborate design with too much earth moving.  If they can't build a course that's easy to walk there, they've screwed up.  One article says that 130 acres have been allocated, which should yield a concise, walkable routing.

Looks like they are following the Oklahoma State University Karsten Creek model.... right down to using Tom Fazio as architect. Although Peter Jacobsen will consult.

This Beaver thinks the Ducks should have their Fazio course and should keep it mostly to themselves.  :P

Especially if it means they will be taking fewer tee times at Bandon.

Based on the rain we're getting and having played Eugene area courses in the winter, they probably should spend $20 million on drainage.

I don't like the sounds of this.  We Ducks are typically labeled tree hugging hippies and I can't imagine a project of this sort is going to garner a lot of favor in the local community.

I recognize some corp. support is necessary now days to raise the bar in your athletic program.  The football team has every bell and whistle known to man.  The basketball team just got a new arena.

Be careful when letting the fox into the hen house.

Why doesn't someone like Dan Hixson get this commission, he grew up 20 mins. south of Eugene for goodness sakes.

Tom Fazio?  Yuck!

I couldn't agree more.  Dan Hixson is a rising star and waaaaaaay underrated.  The "new basketball court" is uglier than sin, which is almost as ugly and the Ducks football unis.  Nike - the worldwide leader in RUINING sports:)

What were some of the other college golf courses built for?

Tom - Didn't you move a ton of dirt at Texas Tech? Was it THAT expensive?

A top rate course in Eugene would need how much for sand capping to make it playable all year round?

My wife is a Duck and she rolled her eyes at this one - At least, you can argue, in Football the team brings a TON of exposure to the school and it makes money (???) with the bowl games. Sinking $25M into a golf course could probably be spent a lot more efficiently improving academic programs at the school, or am I crazy? I guess that isn't as glamorous . . .

Maybe they will name it the "Puddles Course" after the mascot...also the term Duck Hook will take on a new meaning. I still like the idea of any new course being built in Oregon!

Rob,

Once again the problem here is that a bunch of rich white guys want to donate money for a private playground for the few.

I would assume that these same rich white guys have also donated lots of money to the school also.

Our personal rich  guy T. Boone Pickens is well known for the millions he has given to the athletics program, however he also also been quite generous to academics as well giving over 220 million.

Is this the best use of $25 million? Probably not.. but if you believe its their money to do what they wish with....

As we all know Eugene CC is a great course in Eugene now. The line about investing in a helicopter to fly the golfers down to Bandon in funny and spot on. I find 25 Mill to be almost a joke in this day and time for a course. With all due respect to the architects on our site there is no need to spend a third of that on any course short of blowing up a mountain and building 4 lane cart paths. at interstate spects. The Fazio group will make their year on this one.

a sand cap would be the way to go, but that may negatively impact any natural contours of the site

no doubt that no one was screaming for a U of O golf course especially for 25m, no matter how cool the smell of fresh cut swoosh is

additionally, Bandon Muni Links is opening in a couple years once the state agrees to more land swapping

and Bend, Oregon has several courses you could have or maybe still could buy for less than 10 million

Having grown up in Oregon, I think Oregon should focus on utilizing more of it's pristine coast land to create awesome courses. They are worth 25 million. Living now in the flattest country in the world if I had a dollar for every boring flat course designed in this country I'd almost have enough money for a round at Pacific Dunes....not bad mind you. However, my world needs less flat courses or courses built on flat sites. I'm all for minimal earth moving, or at least creating the impression that was done.

Let's invest in the Oregon coast and preserve some of those beautiful places for future generations of golfers. I vote for starting with one of my favorite places, Ecola State Park by Cannon Beach.

The construction budget for The Rawls Course was $8 million.  We didn't sand cap it, and they are still playing out of a temporary clubhouse.

It has been pointed out a couple of times already, but the article says the $25 million is to include an endowment for the maintenance of the course.  So I'm guessing they plan to spend $15 million building it (hopefully they get a clubhouse, too) and put the other $10 million into the endowment.

Tom,

TT has a clubhouse now, as of last month when I played there.

As to cost, you are probably right, but I also note that this course plan has a real long entry road that might eat up many millions depending on what level they build it to.....

Tim,

I was kidding of course. Ecola State Park is by far my favorite park in Oregon and close to home. I have many a fond memory of the place. I'm just saying if you have 25 million to spend on making a great golf course there are better places than flatland to do it, where it just might also be welcomed.

Jeff,

I doubt the sand there is too soft for some reason. Bandon Dunes Resort seemed to have done pretty well with it. Although I know it's hard to maintain in the high winds there.

I heard a rumor that Pronghorn sold for less than $10M, which I think makes every course in Bend available for under $10M.
