University of Oregon to build New Golf Course
« on: November 19, 2012, 11:07:50 PM »
It's going to be on an 800 acre piece of land, they're planning on using 130 acres for it. I'm not really sure that it's a "10" in terms of land for golf, but the property looks okay.

I talked to Casey Martin, and he offered to take me out to the site when he gets into the slow part of golf season. I'll post photos when I get out there.

Hey, the architect called his client's land a '10 out of 10', so it must be a great property!

$25 mill for a course designed by Tom Fazio?  Feels like the late 90's all over again!

My personal favorite comment went along the lines of, "We're going to put as much money as we need to put into the project for it to be the best. We're going to spend whatever we have to spend."

I need to go look at the site myself, but the area looks pretty much like flat farm/cattle land.

Is $25-30 million enough, too much, too little...

Not going to get much play based on the prospectus

Hope it's awesome, surely will be a walking Fazio course  8)

“Do you think that the UO is going to put up with a golf course that isn’t as environmentally sensitive as it can be?”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't spending $25 million on the project indicate that this is not the most environmentally considerate project?

Connor:

Not necessarily.  You'd have to see a plan to decide that.

However, this certainly doesn't sound like a done deal yet ... raising $25 million for a golf course is not easy, especially if the University itself wants to stay on the sidelines.

Probably not that difficult to raise that kind of money with a small company called Nike already heavily invested in UO athletics and golf.

What they should do is invest in a helicopter and have their golfers play on practically the four best courses in the US just down the coast from Eugene.

There are two very strong courses in Eugene already, Eugene CC and Emerald Valley, and I'll bet U of O golfers have the use of both.

Even better.

I do know, as a student I would have loved to have access to a course.  Hopefully they will keep the fee low.

I agree with TD here.  Things will get all confused now that it is out.  Where is Peter Jacobsen in this? Are there other pros that attended Oregon?   I would bet $$$ that the TF group did not let this out of the bag.  Oh well, Nice to start hearing of courses on the horizon again.

One thing to consider in the $25 million price tag. According to the story that is to build the golf course AND establish an endowment to fund operation into the future.

If that is the case, it seems as if the endowment part of the price tag is probably pretty significant.

Will this be another "University" golf course that Brad Klein will have to exclude from his rankings?

I don't like the sounds of this.  We Ducks are typically labeled tree hugging hippies and I can't imagine a project of this sort is going to garner a lot of favor in the local community.

I recognize some corp. support is necessary now days to raise the bar in your athletic program.  The football team has every bell and whistle known to man.  The basketball team just got a new arena.

Be careful when letting the fox into the hen house.

Why doesn't someone like Dan Hixson get this commission, he grew up 20 mins. south of Eugene for goodness sakes.

Tom Fazio?  Yuck!
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

I'll side with you that spending $20-25MM is not an environmentally considerate project.

With the Ducks not going to the NC or Rosebowl game they may not have as much funding as they thought. ::)

Many "university" projects are not really begun by the University at all.  It's just easier to get the money to get a project done if it can be done under the university's aegis so that the funds to build the course are tax deductible "donations".  But in any case, there is no way any of the money is going to come from the University's general fund.

If Dan Hixson grew up 20 minutes south of Eugene, then he probably grew up in the exact city this is going to be built in. Creswell is also the site of Emerald Valley which is a quality course. The Fazio signing has the smell of Nike all over it.

Looks like they are following the Oklahoma State University Karsten Creek model.... right down to using Tom Fazio as architect. Although Peter Jacobsen will consult.

Well, the later article posted above identifies Mick Humphreys as the developer of The Vintage Club in California ... so his choice of architect would hardly be a surprise.

I wonder how a maintenance endowment works in the modern era.  Twenty years ago you could plan on getting an 8% or even a 10% return.  Nowadays, if you put the whole $25 million in the bank, they wouldn't pay you enough interest to mow the greens!
