a chiropractor on speed dial, calluses on my hands, lots of funny clothes I can't wear anywhere but to play golf, a compulsive addiction that only other people on internet message boards can appreciate, a few hours a week to just be free....

I love this game.

I won't air my life history on a publicly accessible site but rediscovering golf in my 30's has given me an inner peace and a place to utilise my habitual tendencies in a positive way! I'm certainly with you Ivan re the lessons in humility.

Many friendships, business tools, deeper cultural integration into The Netherlands, a constructive way to fill in the gaps of time I use to be able to spend with my kids before being divorced, something to replace tennis and skiing as my deepest passion and bordering obsession (important to have something to obsess over), furthered my ability to accept things that are out of my control and move on remaining in the moment, a great reason to travel and shiny travel companions to take with me everywhere. I guess I could keep going on and on...as Emile said I too have a chiropractor on speed dial as well as a ortho manuel therapist that does skeletal realignment. So it's brought me lots of back pain at times which I cured through coaching to change my technique and getting back to my fitness roots.

Uh, Emile, you said boards? Are there others? Are you cheating on us?

A close relationship with my father.

I love what I do, but as my parents get older and the complexities of life take so much of them away, I can look back at the many conversations we had during golf or right after playing and say that is when I truly got to know my father.
With every golf development bubble, the end was unexpected and brutal....

Golf has given me friends.

Golf has given me time with my son.

Golf has given me memories.

Golf has given me nature.

Golf has given me passion.

Golf has given me laughter.

Golf has given me joy.

Golf has given me perspective.

Golf has given me motivation.

Golf has given me exercise.

Golf has given me love.

Golf has given me patience AND patients.

Golf has given me journeys.

Golf has given me the WORLD.

I cannot begin to fully explain the effect of golf on my life.  I spent last week with 3 men receiving grace, laughing, and being loved.  All while playing golf.  I finally met a "friend" who had done me numerous favors, despite never having actually met me...all in the name of love of golf.  I have traveled to and fell in love with Africa because of golf.  This subject could be a 4 volume book.

Here is hoping that we remember to cherish golf and what it does for us.  Thanksgiving is coming and I am very thankful for golf and for all of you who participate here and enrich my life.

THANK YOU.

Bart

I am tempted to say everything as I moved south from MN for college because I wanted to play golf. If I hadn't come South my life would have been entirely different. Through golf I have met so many people and enjoyed so many things. The vast majority of my lifelong friends are the guys I played golf with as a teenager. Although I equate golf to a drug, I sure hope I don't go to rehab!

Time with my son, watching him grow up so he can fly a 5 wood past my best drive.
Time with my wife, who is the fastest walker I have ever played with.
Time with friends.
The knowledge of how I react to various situations, good and bad.
Competition.
Hours alone to enjoy trying to be better, trying to be my best, even if that is not really good enough, and will never be good enough, but the quest to try is what it is all about. You can never be as good as you want to be, but the journey makes the destination unimportant. Of course, I have only been playing for 50 years so there is still time to work on it, and that is the best of all.

Golf has given me a lot more than I've given golf, although I'm trying to catch up!

My dad taught me to play and sacrificed to join a club so my brother and I could play on a regular basis.  I cherished all the time he spent with me and golf.

Now I love every round I play with my son.  Golf is this continuum that keeps fulfilling your life.

Before I left the golf business, 13 years of a living.  Within those 13 years, more connections to people from all walks of life that have turned into friendships than I can count.

Now a days, a weekly dose of humility, an escape from the pressures of daily life and the connection to friends that transcends parties and work acquaintances.

This DG is a great example.  There are many people this board has introduced me to that I'm much the better for.  Thank you to those I've gotten to know through this DG both face to face and in "cyber space."

Golf course architecture is a whole lot cleaner and fun to discuss than politics!

I see golf as a unique and extremely pleasant reason to travel all over the world and meet different people, thus broadening your horizons.
I can see, how in the future golf will be so much more than that for me.

I have one question to the gentlemen who mentiond humility. How golf teaches you humility? What are you talking about.

Ivan

I think the idea of humility in golf is accepting most of us suck.  Therefore, we need other, perhaps more important reasons to devote so much time and effort to the game.  a few good shots does not a quality make make.

Sucking at golf...hmmm.
I have to admit here that golf has also given me a lot to think of. It is a popular belief that if one has enough time to practice something he will inevitably become very proficient at that. Golf, indeed, teaches you that no matter how much you practice and/or how long you have been playing it, you will still suck and big time. Unless you have talent.

Most people deny to admit this and, instead, always find excuses - they can speak endlessly about how they don't have time to practice, are old, weak and not flexible enough. Although, you know that they dedicate more time to golf than reasonable.

Still, rarely do I see humility on a golf course. Just ask your teaching pro why he doesn't play on Tour. I bet the answer will be along the lines of "it is more interesting for me to teach" (which is quite simply hilarious) and "I didn't have sponsors to cover my travel costs" (which is even more hilarious).

Sorry, for the off-topic but the bottom line is that golf has given me and keeps giving a lot to think about.

To the other Ivan the Terrible - Did you never hear of the 'humbling game?' Any humility I can ever muster was learnt on the golf course. Whenever I get cocky, it doesn't take long before I am slapped down and 'put in my box.' Would you believe being 7-up and seven to go in an important championship match - only to stagger home 1-up? How humbling was that? Scoring 67-82 back to back in the Irish National Championship was a pretty humbling experience that was the product of an undoubtedly bewitching game and a dose of over-confidence.
