Appropriate rankings for 'toughest tee time???'
« on: November 11, 2012, 08:43:04 PM »
Like most everyone here, I love playing golf. The experience is always more special when played at a course with great history, terrific design, and variety of memorable holes. Playing a course that's difficult to get on is always bookmarked in my brain.

I saw this recent ranking of the 10 toughest tee times in the US (http://www.golf.com/photos/toughest-tee-times-golf-courses-united-states/augusta-national?hpt=hp_t3) . Most of the obvious ones I agree with: Augusta, Pine Valley, Cypress. However, I'm surprised that Shinnecock or National Golf Links isn't ranked.

What do you guys think? Any other courses that would make the 'true top 10?'

Seems like the magazine is just reworking the hardest courses to get on?

Elerston, Porcupine Creek, The Floridian, Morfar are a few I would suggest?

With an issue such as this, everything depends on who you are and who you know.

The list would be completely different for someone in the golf business, vs. someone who's a panelist, vs. someone who is a wealthy CEO type, vs. just an average golfer.  Of course, for just an average golfer, there are 100+ courses that are pretty much impossible to get on, and I don't know what is the point of ranking which is most impossible.

Joel, is The Floridian is equally tough to access since the change of ownership?

Is The Floridian worth playing if one can get on?

Especially if you're born of a certain faith, right?

Cherokee Plantation here in S.C. would seem to be high on such a list. As would The Institute in Silicon Valley, right?

The toughest tee time is any Sunday time on the Old Course. They
give out a few every 5 years and even those are earned.

Mike,

I am involved with a special event in St. Andrews next year for the 600th Anniversary of the University.  On June 21st, 22nd and 23rd 2013 there is an event for 40 lucky 4 balls, for play on all 3 days.  All dinners, prizes, lectures from world class speakers and golf included.

Friday 21st, Kingsbarns
Saturday 22nd, The Dukes
Sunday 23rd, The Old Course

This will be one of a handful of times in the 600 years of both the Old Course and the University that golf outside of a major competition will be played on a Sunday, on the Old.  Full access to a certain clubhouse too.  $40000 a 4 ball for the 3 days if anyone is interested! All proceeds to the University, which is deemed a charitable donation.  Not bad for the golf experience of a lifetime combined with a tax write-off.  Clearly not all of us can afford this.

The University, founded in 1413 and the 3rd oldest in the English speaking world, has an endowment of £38m.  To put that into context Oxford and Cambridge (1 and 2 in the Oldest ranks) have endowments of around £3billion and £2 billion respectively.  Harvard apparently has one North of $30 billion.

Dig out the loose change lads!

Simon

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

Simon, I have a better chance of making the cut at the Open than getting a 40,000 charge past my wife. Sunday at TOC remains a tough tee time! That said, I expect you will be very successful and do great work equipping the University. Gope it goes well!
