It's nowhere near the quality of the courses being more seriously submitted for this list, but this thread makes me think of the Scarlet Course at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC. The course is just under 6,000 yards with a handful of fascinating drivable par 4s and reachable par 5s where all the earthmoving that was done seems to have amounted to the pushing-up of the greens and the scooping-out of the bunkers. Always a fun course to play, if not the hardest or "best," and one that could sneak up on you.
