You mean: If I were forced to play one course for the rest of my life?

Is climate (and thus, among other things, length of the season) a relevant consideration?  Or could we assume LA weather in Merion, PA or Bandon, OR?

So I think the easiest thing to do is create a checklist. I'd want it to be:

On the ocean, for weather and scenery
Playable year-round
A masterclass in design, so that I may always learn new things when playing and my appreciation can only grow
Provide strategy for my current low-handicap skill level, but also be strategic for me as my game and I age
A walking course that is not overly hard to walk
Have alternate loops in the routing for shorter afternoon rounds
Be geographically accessible for friends and family to visit (limits to U.S. and not in the boonies)

NGLA (though it may not be too pleasant in January), CPC, Seminole, Friar's Head, Sebonack, and...?

Honorable Mention: LACC, I think the architecture and the location give it enough points to join the unbold group. There's also the South course for when I can no longer hit a high draw

The Golf Club...

Ideal setting.  Secluded.  Peaceful.  Interesting, subtle, and at times bold golf.  Close to my family.  Great jerky!

Fishers Island-if you have been no explanation is needed as to why one would want to play it forever- NGLA is also very good-but  Fishers has the water element on every hole with views that are unsurpassed anywhere. Fishers is now among my top 3 alongside CPC and Shinny. By a hair over Merion, NGLA, TOC, RCD, and Sand Hills.

Tough to say anything on LI due to the weather from November to March.  Same with Ballyneal.

No sweating at Bandon in summer, I like that.  But rain?  I don't mind it, but I don't want to carry rain gear all the time.

I'll join Jeff at Palmetto.  Daily dogfights, 2 dollar beers.  I hear the course is pretty good too.

Yeah, 1.50 to 2.00.  Said some pros from a swanky joint on LI came by after the masters and stayed in the grill too long drinking bud diesel.

After all these years Sand Hills is still the place for me. The rest of the world disappears when I am there. I love the golf, the open space, the staff, the food, the whole shooting match. The only thing that comes close to golfing at Sand Hills is getting a burger at Ben's Porch while fueling up for another round and enjoying the view. Royal Dornoch would be my second choice.
The shortish season isn't a problem, because the forced time away just makes getting to go back the next season all the sweeter. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Seriously, there are so many courses, and I don't have the capacity to determine the answer in a logical way nor emotional, come to think of it.

This is for those out there of a certain age that are dealing with health issues; my actual answer is that I'd consider it a blessing to be physically able to play golf for the rest of my life.  I know some of our friends from GCA.com are struggling with that concept.

Dick,

Like you I'd have a hard time picking just one course, but if health was the major concern, I'd don't know if many could beat Kingston Heath for the combination of quality golf and ease of walking the course.

Long time no speak. Hope all is well for you.

...could play one course for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Okay, I'm going to take a different tack than everyone else here....a realistic one

For a variety of reasons most of us will never end up living out our lives in the places where these courses are. But my wife and I moved to Kansas in 1998 and the golf course was a primary factor in where we lived (she took a job that allowed her to live almost anywhere in the state.)

So... we actually had the course picked out that we would play the rest of our lives.

I love the place, I can afford to play there to the end of my days, and it was within 10 minutes of my house in Topeka--which is paid for.

It's not so hard that I feel beaten up when I finish, it's not exotic, it's not even famous.  Almost no one here has ever played it, but it's just a solid, enjoyable Donald Ross designed golf course.

Sadly, the members of Shawnee CC were responsible enough to keep the course from going into receivership and it now belongs to people who simply don't care. It makes me want to cry.

We are now retired, and trying to decide where we are going move.  The fact that Albuquerque is on both of the "Where to Retire" lists in another thread here is intriguing, especially since my brother lives there.

But... if you asked me to pick from among the other courses I have played Brora and Wild Horse would probably be at the top of the list.

K

Ken, I like your style!  I envy your situation that the wife plays and is integral to the decision.  I have a late life itch to do one more move as well and can only dream that I had a wife whose golf interests would play a part.  That is nil in this residence.   ::)  Count your golf interest blessings!  Though it obviously isn't a serious primary consideration in most folks lives...yet most of us can relate...  ;) ;D 8)

Prestwick! for me it is one of the most perfectly balanced courses around. It has everything I'm looking for except remoteness, but I wouldn't want to travel to the end of the world to play golf for the rest of my life  :P

The Old Course at St. Andrews.

It is the heart and soul of golf.
It would never get boring.
The town atmosphere adds to the special experience of being at St. Andrews.
Good stout on tap across the street from the course.
(I am assuming I can also spend time putting on The Himalayas.)
