This old thread from 2003 discussing the final group of candidates for the Trails course has some pretty good tidbits:

Particularly enjoyed this one:

"We've talked a lot about why some of the big name guys would not take this project, namely, the risk that the course simply can't measure up to the other 2 because of the ocean. "

So much at Bandon depends on wind direction. I played there for the first time last week in two-to-three-club winds that we were told were not from the prevailing direction. For instance, 14 was directly into the wind -- undriveable for me, certainly, taking that option off the table -- while 18 played straight downwind.

The landing area for tee shots on 18 was completely blind; my wife and I were playing without a caddie, so we had to guess when it was okay to tee off. Turns out we didn't wait long enough, as our tee shots surely bounded down the hill and into the group in front of us, though we never saw them and they didn't turn to say anything to us as they were walking up the hill to the green. While we waited for them to putt out, the twosome behind us bombed two downwind drives that landed where we were standing and rolled 20 yards past us. I don't blame them; they had no idea where we were, and no way to know how long to wait.

I take it this isn't much of a problem against the prevailing wind, but it's a dangerous situation downwind. The only change I'd make to the closing 5 holes at BT is to lower that first fairway so the landing area isn't blind.

Rich,
If 18 was straight downwind that is pretty close to the winter prevailing wind out of the SSW, #1 plays directly into that wind.
Despite the title, I have a tee time at Trails on the 19th, and assuming my back doesn't flame out by then, expect to hear from me.

Pete, FWIW, I will be there then and was told it was closed, never the less, hope to see you there. Playing Pacific on Monday.

Rich, I too have heard recently and hope it's true, that the main changes are on 18 as 14 and 16 have already been softened.

Groups that made reservations for Bandon Trails before the announcement of the closure can play BT even though it is "closed".
I just don't know what to expect after we crest the hill, except for a strong southerly.

I was down there for a dismal river of waether. That plus a weak back limited me to 27 holes, Bandon and up to the hut on Trails.
I asked the head professional at Trails what was antipated. If I rememer correctly

#14 no further changes. The front right bunker was collapsing and was corrected which helps the right front. The left front bunker has been moved to the left.

#15 work to be done on the front of the green

#16 work done. The left side of the green has been raised and right side fairway bunkers were moved.

#17 done, new forward tees

#18. the reason for the closure with a new, lower green, the fairway ridge to be lowered and the tees to be moved to the right, making it more of a dogleg.

No specifics beyond that.

My two bits having just come back. 14 I liked better before they made the last changes. Sure it was quirky and arguably too tough of a green from down below but it was the kind of thing you don't forget and it's good for courses to have some of those things. Look how much free press and publicity and discussion it creates. To me the new one looks less natural. I managed to make par each time I played (lucky I suppose), although this time it was a 3 put par (ok 3 swings with the putter) as my drive landed just short of the front and the pin was all the way back on the lower shelf.

We had a strong wind on the day, I'm guessing at least windforce 6. So played 15-18 into the wind with darkness falling. I really like the stretch and on this day was relying on it and waiting for it in order to come back and win my match. 16 wasn't bad but it was funny as all 3 of us hit really good drives in varying spots, I thought I really hit a bullet into the wind and when I got up there all 3 of our balls were in the same exact spot. Go figure! That hole is all about the 2nd and 3rd shots no doubt. I like it the way it is as well.

17 is just an excellent part 3. Tough into the wind but fair. I wouldn't change it either nor would I change 18. If we had to change every hole where a shot too short of the green (thus a bad shot) rolled back down the hill we'd have to redo a lot of the course.

Nice to here that there's no further changes to 14 green, I thought the last reno adequately addressed the strong chances of taking an X.  What exactly is being done to 17 besides a new forward tee?

Looks great in the pic and honestly more attractive than before. If you had told me it was always like that I would have believed you.

Can the group ahead be seen from the tee if they are standing at the bottom of the swale over the ridge in the fairway?
