Golf guidence near Hartsfield Oct 25
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:18:04 PM »

I must drop someone off at Hartsfield at 7am on Oct 25 and pick them up at 3pm the same day.

Guess to kill time, I will play golf. I know Atl fairly well, well enough to know what traffic near the airport will be like at 7am.

From the archives it looks like Summergrove and Wolf's Creek are candidates but the info was old.

Access to most courses is not a problem excluding the top 2-3.

Any suggestions? Anyone want to play?

Thanks

Fred

Fred,

I think I played Wolf Creek and The Frog a few years ago when I needed to be close to the airport. I think I liked Wolf Creek better but they were both good options. The Frog's a Fazio and a little further away but headed away from the city.

Wolf Creek is quite good.

Wolf Creek.

Summergrove is now private, and The Frog is a fairly long drive from the airport.

East lake is worth a play, if you haven't played it yet.

Mike Young's Wolf Creek (just west of Hartsfield, maybe five miles on Camp Creek Pkwy) is very good. Two odd holes where Mike wasn't allowed to relocate some utility pipes, but lots of other really good holes. You will enjoy the course.

The Piedmont Driving Club course is in the same direction, a little closer the the airport. It's private. Wolf Creek is a better choice.

I'd love it if you played PDC and began a discussion about it on here.

I find the setting to be darn near ideal and I love playing golf there...but it isn't necessarily a great course.  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I may try for PDC, I could get on East Lake but I want to save that bullet for when I have a friend or two along to enjoy the full experience.

Looks like Wolf Creek is a good option if PDC does not work out, I would not be surprised if it is more interesting anyway. Mike Young over Rees Jones seems like a good bet.

Thanks all

Fred,

Another opinion would steer you to Dogwood, my "home course" even though I live by the Zoo.  I think it has as much character as most newer public tracks, is very walkable, cheap, and it has some fantastic natural holes.  Let me know if you want any more info on it as the website will do it no justice.  I like it better than Wolf Creek.

Cheers

Will,
You know of course, that it is 30 miles through tough traffic to Dogwood and 12 miles down Camp Creek Pkwy to Wolf Creek.  No comparison there.

As to the courses, I don't think many would agree with you about the relative merits of the two courses, and I mean no offense to Dogwood.

A.G.,

I am well aware of the added time.  It would not be the easiest of the courses mentioned to get to.

And I am sure I am not in the majority in recommending Dogwood over WC.  Still, I find the former to much more charming.  The holes I like at WC are 2, 5, 6, 13, 15, & 18.  At Dogwood, I like 1, 3, 5, 6, 10, and 13-17 I think have lots of charm.  I even like the two parallel par-5's at 9 & 18.  I think the reason I like it is that I can't hit driver 14 times, I have to think my way around more so that at WC.

Cheers

can't remember the name, but we played a nine-hole course 3 or 4 times between flights - it was public, very close to the airport, old layout, lots of locals playing for $$$.  Had an old "clubhouse".....

Could it have been the Inman Park course?

No one's gonna say it, so I will.  Browns Mill.  10 minutes tops from Hartsfield.
THE NEXT SEVEN:  Alfred E. Tupp Holmes Municipal Golf Course, Willi Plett's Sportspark and Driving Range, Peachtree, Par 56, Browns Mill, Cross Creek, Piedmont Driving Club

Nice Gary!  I've lived 5 minutes away for 4 years and still have not played the golf course.  But, I doesn't look too bad, although really flat once off the hill?

The diverse clientelle appeals to me, though, as did my "home" course in DC, Langston.  I need to make it over for round.

Cheers

This is probably the College Park course; you actually see a bit of it from Camp Creek Parkway.
