Emmet Long par 3's
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:22:03 PM »
Emmet may have designed the most quality long par 3's.  This is the uphill, probably 40 feet, 223 yard 3rd at Bedford Golf & Tennis

And for long and really long,
the 228 yard 3rd at McGregor Links

And the 256 yard 11th at McGregor Links

The 11th at Mcgregor looks (and probably plays) like a par 4!

Is the second photo the same hole as the first photo?  Aren't we getting a little "modern" with that much sand visible from a tee forty feet below the green?  And not visible (if the second picture is the same hole) from a ground level shot from the side?

The 3rd hole at Bedford is a victim of  Ken Dye construction.  After doing well recieved work at Westchester and Round Hill, he started making his bunkers in his own style.

Liked the look of the first two but Mcgregor links hole looked less than ordinary. I assume it is the photos that don't do it justice.

With the upcoming return of the original 12th at GCGC, here is what had been the best long par 3 in Garden City, the 13th at Cherry Valley which plays to 235 yards.  This green is in need of some restoration.  The original green came all the way up to the cross bunker and had a depth of about 75 yards according to an old member, Jarvis Page, who belonged to GCGC, Rockaway, Links Club, Shinny, NGLA, and CVC at one time.

Some people think that's a prototype of a Reef hole.

Here is the 4th at Glen Head CC which plays 206 yards.  The trees in view were supposedly removed this spring.

This is the 220 yard 7th which plays about 35 feet downhill.

The 11th at Mcgregor looks (and probably plays) like a par 4!

3 at McGregor plays a lot more difficult than 11....more trouble to get in to. Save for a big snap hook, tough to make more than 4 on 11.

I was going to post 9 at Huntington, but it's not an original hole.   Though a very good one!
