The way I watch the pros play a course like Oak Hill is to try to imagine the course if it were under a regiment that reflects my own personal preferences for how golf courses could play.

The way they have the course(trees, grass lines, height of cuts, routing, new greens, etc.) are a reflection of others' preferences.

We can either agree or disagree with those preferences, and should be able to discuss them here as we wish.

And, as far as Oak Hills' preferences that are on display, I agree with those who find it difficult to stay interested as a viewer. I can't imagine anything adventurous or out of the ordinary happening during this Championship. Someone will struggle with the deep rough, others will have tree trouble, and no one will have a problem with an approach shot holding the green.

I struggle with the idea that this type of setup produces a great champion. What champions of any tournaments weren't great, respective of the rest of the field on that particular week? I don't understand.

Joe,

Good points.  All these traditional methods of protecting par and some of these guys still shoot nothing.  Why not give them a chance at recovery?  All these storied venues this year and I have no desire to play any of 'em.  I feel like I can just put Digest's list on my wall and cross off each championship venue from my to-do list with each passing event.  Pinehurst can't come soon enough IMO.

I have never been to the course so can't comment on it. However this tournament is just plain boring. I am trying hard to watch it, I love golf, but it is just uninteresting. Just an opinion.

I would shoot 90++ at Merion, Muirfield and Oak Hill, but I'd still love to play them all.  I guess I won't let you know when I get it arranged!

And, before you get all lathered up about Pinehurst #2, just remember what the USGA did to it last time. THAT was unwatchable. And we were rewarded with the legendary Michael Campbell.

Yes, the worst thing that ever happened to Olympia Fields.

Which means Olympia Fields is in great shape! Good guy, this Furyk, even with the caught-in-a-telephone-line takeaway.

That's garbage, of course, but I think this could shape up to be interesting television. McElroy seems to have come out if his light coma, Scott hasn't shoved that many makable putts, Dufner seems like he has detectable blood pressure and Furyk hasn't needed his caddie's bib. Yet. And Stenson might yet finish a major. Lastly, despite the arboreal goalposts, I think Oak Hill is getting tougher and more credible. As if it really has anything to prove.

The leaderboard is solid but I can barely watch 5 min of the tournament as its so boring. It looks and feels like a World Golf Championship.

Neither Valhalla or Torrey Pines gets any credibility for providing excellent tournament drama. What upsets me is that the PGA Tour costs me $100/month whether I watch it or attend any events or not. I pay because i play the game.  I just want it to go away or at least not suck. Now I'm in the greatest city in the world and I can't even watch it if I wanted to.

It's the same course as it was during that epic Seve vs. Lehman Ryder Cup match, when Seve made one crazy up and down after another.

This week actually reminds me a lot of the Olympia Fields open.  Of course, the rough was cut at Olympia, but soft conditions with no wind means these guys will score and their is little the course can do (which is fine with me).

Golf is the only sport where we watch the best of the game play on fields modified for their play. It needs to stop. If you want to be an apologist than so be it. I can tolerate but I refuse to celebrate these bastardized venues.

Exactly, basketball was hurt by the three point line. It would be all but dead with an 11' basket.
