Old photos of Woking
« on: October 15, 2012, 08:16:37 AM »
I'm on the hunt for old photos of Woking, especially anything that shows the 'Johnny Low' bunker on the seventeenth. If anyone has such pics, would they be kind enough to post here, or contact me by email or the GCA messaging system?

Thanks in advance

Adam -

I recall that the Woking club history had a good picture of the bunker. I will check my book at home.

That's the book I have. I'll try to figure out where I saw the picture.

Looks like Mackenzie looking for a missing bottle.

Not sure who is on the ladder, but he is probably climbing up to hit a shot. The porch roof at Woking used to be an integral part of the course and in play.

I'm pretty sure that is C H Alison climbing onto the roof of the Woking clubhouse to play a shot to the 14th green during an Oxford Cambridge Golfing Society match.

Bob

Adam - Haven't found the picture of the 17th green, but still looking.

It was the 1904 University match. Hugh Alison was playing for Oxford. Interestingly, though, he was playing the eighteenth, not the fourteenth - pulled his approach onto the roof apparently. It was made OB shortly afterwards, though the terrace is still in play, and I believe sees lots of action - you only need to skull your approach to 14 slightly to be on there...

Adam,
You really had my hopes up.  I thought you were posting old photos of Woking.
Wish I had some to share.

Adam,

There's a picture in Frank Pennink's 1952 book "Homes of Sport: Golf" of a group putting on the 14th green with the 17th green and 18th fairway in the background. Unfortunately the background is not clear enough to see much detail around the green.

Mark,

No, nothing in the "Design for Golf" (1950s) reprint of the original.

Adam =

I have a photo of two players walking up the hill to the 2nd green circa 1905. You can't see much, if any, of the course.

Happy to send it on if you can use it.
