George & Karl,

Martis Camp transcends gender identities. However, I am pleased by your archaic notions of superficial objectification.

Kyle,

I find it interesting some of the trees that he chose to keep (see pic 10 d for an example). Obviously it was carved out of the trees but I don't understand why he left some of the trees he did...

Many of these photos were taking from angles that do not represent those typically seen by golfers.

Another awesome photo log, Kyle, you da man.

Things I liked are the 16th, nice little green benched into the hill.  Nice to see Fazio doing something small like that.

A lot of gorgeous flowing bunker work, some of the most elaborate stuff I've seen since Vintage Club.
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Thank you, Sir Dugger.

The 16th is a neat little hole. It's driveable, but with the native area on the right and a tricky recovery from pin-high left, short-hitters have a chance to win the hole with two accurate shots.

Great photo tour! I have to say one of the more picturesque courses I've seen.

It seems to me that Fazio is at his best at an "extreme" site.  This definitely some of his best work I've seen.

I believe the site required a large amount of earthworks, but the Fazio team disguised their handiwork pretty effectively.

The most obvious sign of man's influence is represented by the (now less) mammoth blasted rock outcropping that serves as the foundation for the 100,000 square foot clubhouse/restaurant/pro shop/spa/gym/ballroom.

Seems they accomplished an impressive feat, being on the side of a mountain...and the course still looks very natural and playable.

The USGA Junior Amateur is played at Martis Camp this week.   I believe it's going to be televised.

Edited.  My mistake.

Joel:

You must have missed a word in that post.  The US Amateur is at Brookline, in three weeks.

Medalist was 8 under in the two qualifying rounds. The course is set up about 7600 yards at an elevation of 5900 ft.

Thanks all for picking up my slight error.  I edited the post.

The web site is http://www.usga.org/ChampEventSite.aspx?id=17179869329

Within the USGA web page I found this.  I'm not the biggest fan (and am less of a fan today after seeing numerous photos of what he has done to the bunkers at Pine Valley) having only played maybe 15 of his courses but I have to agree on this statement.

After playing the golf course at Martis Camp near Lake Tahoe, two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen remarked, “Needless to say, Tom Fazio has designed some pretty amazing courses in his career, but after playing the Martis Camp course, I think this is without a doubt the best Fazio course I’ve ever played.”

One of our club's Juniors, Cole Berman made it to the first round of match play in the Jr. Am out there.  I will be interested to hear his thoughts on the course when he gets back.
