« on: July 09, 2003, 12:13:05 PM »
Just thought some of you crusty old :o Donald Ross Society members should be kept abreast of recent developments over here. Taking place around my home town......

Not to sound too critical, but the PGA needs to brush up on their Donald Ross before building what is shown on the routing plan on the website.  There are a couple of holes that Ross would not even consider.  Just my humble opinion.

As a Brit I know nothing about Ross but am also puzzled by his 'connection' with this project.
What I do know suggests he excelled, like his contemporaries, in making the best of good to decent sites with relatively little earth moving.
This project appears to offer a dismal site but plenty of budget for earth moving. If the old farts on the council have to look to America surely more modern examples such as (fill in your names here) offer more expertise and inspiration.
PS What's a bing?

For what it's worth I'd guess that a bing is what we call a slag pile here in the Ohio Valley.  And a slag pile is the residue of coke furnaces and other by products of mining and steel production.  The odor would come from the odd sulphur compounds that escape to atmosphere.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

Lester,
You say "There are a couple of holes that Ross would not even consider.  Just my humble opinion."
I know little about Ross, and to my (unprofessional) eye going over the routing plan nothing jumps out as clearly non-Rossian. Can you point out some specifics ?
  Thanks.

Neil,

I run the risk of sounding like I'm "sharpshooting" if I elaborate.  There's really not much else to say except the routing has characteristic flaws which may be interpreted from close inspection.  Study old photography and routings actually done by Ross and you see the differences in strategy, sequence, balance and so on.
