I've posted some images of Royal County Down in 1968 that I thought might be of interest.

As ever, the course looks fantastic. I especially like the bunker that looks a little unkempt and the rough full of dandelions or the like.

As for the last 2, the problem that I have with caddies today is that they don't dress for the occasion!

That looks like a Shell's WWOG. Who was playing?

In the 6th picture are those trees behind the green?

Martin,

Don January and Christie O'Conner. January had a nice little 68.

Mark,

Good catch! Those are probably cameras disguised as trees. The crew heavily camouflaged their impact, to give a more normal look, but it still sometimes stands out.

Andy, Thank you for the pictures. They take me back. I had a cousin who lived in Newcastle and was a member. We were then senior school age. My mother came from Rathfriland and we usually took our summer holidays there. We played the second course much more than the championship one - because we lost fewer balls!

Mark,

My pleasure; glad you enjoyed them.

Can you (or anyone else) tell me, if I (without my name on my bag and a TV production crew) turned up at Royal County Down (or any other top UK/Ireland course) in the 60s and asked for a caddie, what are the chances that he'd be wearing a coat and tie?

Brilliant! I'd pay extra for that.

It's a case of appearance over substance.

Yes, the caddy gets full marks for presentation, but points off for not controlling the flag flapping in the breeze while he tends the pin.

On the first hole, January has a long putt. The caddie is tending the flag, and the ball is heading in, but he doesn't pull the pin until the ball is about an inch away. He very nearly cost his man 2 shots on the very first hole.
