Average Cost Per Round?
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:30:17 AM »
Just curious to see the range.  What do folks think is their average green fee cost per round?  For private costs include anything that is mandatory.  In other words, if you don't have to take a caddy or take a locker etc don't include it.

If there are any oddities which you think crank up or down the cost - tell us about it.

Up here in the Scottish Highlands I would say £35 to £40 was average.

In the South West its about £20. * based on a member playing 35 times and a £750 membership* and *£25 being an averaged green fee*

Do you really think its that high ? I suspect that most clubs are down to a hard core of golfers who probably shell out no more than £400 for their subs and probably less in some situations. Assuming they play at least 20 times on average, and for a lot of them it will be much more than that, thats about £20. Throw in the odd away day at £12 to £15 a round and I expect the average cost is a lot less than £40 a round. Could be wrong.

Sean:

If you don't count rounds where I get comped for being in the golf business as zero, I would guess the average I pay is something like $150.  That's because I belong to a private club [with fairly low dues] where I only play an average of ten times per year.  When I travel and play with friends, and reimburse them for the guest fees, they are usually around $100 (or a bit more) at the clubs where I've played.

There are lots of $40 golf courses around Traverse City but I don't really care to play any of them.  Likewise, of all the better courses that I've played lately in the U.S., there are relatively few which cost less than $100.  Even in this economy!

Sean,

My cost per round comes in at about $25 ( about 16 quid) but this is simply because I would play 120-150 rounds a year.....I know...I know!

My dues plus minimums plus locker fee, yada, yada will run somewhere between US$4K and 5K this year (haven't run the exact numbers but probably closer to 5 than 4). I will play about 80-85 rounds at my club for the entire year. So call it $55/round would be a good estimate.

Not too hard to swallow even though I can play very nice, in some cases formerly private, courses right down the road for $35-$45 any time I like just by walking up. In one case a course which used to be private and where I was a member for a while now sells walk-up rounds with cart on weekdays for $34.

Where my own "deal" gets harder to justify is in the occasional year where I end up playing only 50-odd rounds for a net cost approaching $100/round. Still, that is not my normal golf lifestyle so I don't sweat the difference when there's a weird year like that.

Sean,

I am fortunate that I get six months green fees free at my home course - however even with that in mind my nett cost per round is ~ £29.50 which is a great deal higher than I would have thought.

As a breakdown (based on this year):-

26 rounds per year @ £13.50 = £351.00 (Played at home course - PAYP)

25 rounds per year @ ~ £40.00 = £1000.00 (Played at other courses - societies / away days / alliances / pro-ams etc)

Memberships = £150.00 (home course / society)

Total = £1501.00 / 51 = £29.43.

Not including my 26 weeks free golf the average shoots up to £36.31  :-\

Neil.

About $200 for home rounds.  Much less if playing elsewhere.

Niall,

I was assuming that Sean meant greenfee rounds not membership fees devided by number of rounds.

Never a good idea to calculate your average cost per round at your private club!

If you take the entire annual cost of our country club and divide by the rounds I play each year there, it works out to about $200-$250/round, depending on the year.  Part of that is because I just don't play as much golf as I'd like -- I probably average one round/week, and our season in DC is about 8 1/2 months (and we don't stop paying dues in the winter!)  But our dues also cover more than just golf -- we are heavy users of the pool (2 of 3 kids on swim and dive teams, etc).

Playing 50 rounds per year at my club in northern New Jersey equates to ~$275/round - I always take a caddy, so effective all-in cost $350+ per round.

Keith,

I squirm slightly at the thought of my per round cost being near the £30.00 region - if my math is correct you are saying your fees are $13,750 to $17,500 per annum?  I am so cheap.........

this would be nearly impossible for me to calculate.

Would you count times where I just play 5 or 6 holes late at night?   How about the times I just hit bunker shots on the 5th green late at night.

Not that it would ever make sense for a cost-benefit perspective, but things like these are often where the real value of a private club can be found.

Yes...it is almost embarrassing to say, but most NYC-area clubs are $10k+ per year - the good news is the golf is fantastic, we have no tee times and rounds never take more than four hours, conditions are top-rate, etc., but it is a shocking amount of money.

To be honest, I don't know and I don't care to know. I know some guys will figure out their dues and figure out if dues were more than what they would be if they paid greens fees.  I have long felt I don't care if it balances out.

This is a question that just shouldn't be asked on sooooo many levels! I expect I'm around $100/ round though.

Went to non playing membership for a year after playing six rounds last year at cost of $500 a round. Like many others two kids and multiple sports seems to take weekend time.

Private membership in perth runs from $1,500 up to $3,500 per annum in subs and bar levy, nominations range from $0-$10,000

Public golf the average weekday 18 hole round is $25.00, weekends $30.00.

Why is this important?

I think it is important because private clubs in the US cost a ton and they need to deliver a lot of value if they are going to survive.   It is not really a mystery why private clubs are in decline, particularly because there are now enough public courses that the drawback of pace of play, course conditioning and availability of tee times are far less of an issue than they were twenty years ago.

I belong to a private club and cannot imagine going back.  There is still a lot of value for me but I am a golf nut.  Most prospective members are not.

My dues are $4000 a year, and I try to play 20 rounds at minimum. That works out to $200 per round, plus caddy fee..equals 275 per round.

Partially due to the hundred hole hike, I might get up to 30 rounds this year.... that would bring the per round average down to about $200 per visit, which is far more reasonable, particularly since I use a caddy every time.

The upshot is that because this is a national club, most members are playing 10 rounds or less every year.

Europe is far different as everyone knows.

In The Netherlands the average cost of a round is probably about 60 euro (78 USD). This is on a whole. Not including private clubs. The average cost at private clubs is around $150.

Annual fees at my club are $1300 and I think it's the best value I've ever heard of or experienced. One of my favorite courses in the world and the same cost as having a membership at the local public course. This is due to the fact that course is an old course and completely paid for, we do not own the course but the land is leased on the very long term. Is up for renew in something like 2050. We do pay an initiation fee that we do not get back upon leaving of about $4000. Still next to nothing for what we get.

Last year I played about 75 rounds at my home course (+ 50 at other courses), making my cost per round $17. We also have a special deal with the 8 oldest and 8 best clubs in The Netherlands. We can play any of them on a sort of exchange for $35-$40 a round. As these are all really private clubs this is a great great deal. It includes clubs like Kennemer, De Pan, Royal Hague, Eindhovensche, Hilversumsche etc.

I might have one of the best golf situations possible anywhere. Aside of free membership and free golf. I know I'm lucky and I'm grateful for this, one of the reason I'm willing to share as much as I can with anyone who truly loves, respects and appreciates the game.
Sharing the greatest experiences in golf.
