From the day I played at my club as a prospective member until the present, I consider it a modest plus that we have no beverage cart making the rounds of the course. Instead we have water coolers at approximately every other hole and of course a well stocked snack bar in the clubhouse available at the turn.

For one summer and fall right before the big crash a few years back we outfitted a cart and hired a young woman to staff it at weekends. It was reasonably popular but I don't recall any tears being shed when it was discontinued after a few months due to being more trouble and expense than it was worth.

That sounds great Brent. I wish we could get rid of the beverage cart at my course too. We have a snack bar passed between 13 and 14; and again between 16 and 17. I wish they would put one in a location that could get passed 3 times on the front nine and get rid of the cart. Some people you hook up to play with spend their entire time bellyaching about whether or not the beverage cart was coming soon. Bit of a bore.

We also have well placed water coolers which is all that I require, but I buy at the snack bar just to give it a boost.

I've developed the deplorable habit of buying a Gatorade and a Butterfinger bar at the turn every time I play. Playing golf is just about the only exercise I get and I suspect the calories in that candy bar and drink outweigh the 4-1/2 miles of walking every time.

I call it my Snack Of Champions even though I've never won a thing...

4. the cart girls throw it around and that for me is very tiresome
Definition of a GCA stick-in-the-mud:  A very attractive scantily clad girl offering you a cold beer during a round is a nuisance because she arrives on a cart.  Perhaps if she'd walked over hill and dale in plus fours carrying an antique shag bag full of vintage sarsaparilla that would fit your world view better?
I do not really consider myself that much of a snot nose or purist. I reject the business model of the cart girl as part of the entertainment package.  Isn't that part of the 'grow the game problem', the game only being for single 20 something males with limited attention spans?  I have played with a several women that are offended by it all (but of course would never say anything).

I have never had any sasparilla. Is it any good?

The real snack of champions or better breakfast of champions is a Butterfinger and a Bloody Mary. Just ask our own Jamey Bryan. ;D

I just worked out that my round cost for 1980 was less than 6p at my home club (306 rounds for £18 yearly subscription) ;D

I spend between $30 and $50 probably 99% of the time. Once a year I'll go up to 100 bucks, but not much more. I don't have the means to really justify anything higher than that unless I'm on a vacation.

I usually buy one drink and one snack. Sometimes a burger if I have time.

JeffTodd:
Where do you live?
Carl, I have lived in Austin, TX for the past two years. I lived in NJ for the 39 years prior to that. Since I am willing to drive ~3 hours for a good game, NJ presented a lot of  opportunities for very good golf that was accessible to the public; some of those opportunities were in neighboring states, of course.

The golf scene in Austin is very different than NJ. You can play a Doak 3 (using my own estimate) for half the price of a similar course in the northeast, but you are hard pressed to find a public 5 or 6, regardless of what you're willing to spend. The private side is obviously much more shallow, and many of the private clubs are on the "hills" side (west) of the city, and are essentially cart ball clubs. Those that aren't are not in my price range.

In that case, I'm all for shrinking the game ;) ;) ;D ;D

Seriously though, are there no cart guys at the bag drop to even things out?

As a contractor you quickly learn that you can not stay in business lying to yourself about job costs. No doubt my true cost per round is over $200 each.

My average cost per round this year worked out to $125-150/round. I've played fewer rounds at my home course this season and that didn't help the bottom line. Like many others, my free time is limited. I'd rather play at at courses that are 'worth' not only my time but also memorable...not to mention anything less than $50 near me guarantees a 5 hour round.

Are you in the business of laying cart paths while you play?
