Bunkering - best of the best
« on: October 04, 2012, 02:18:07 AM »
I'm sure this has been discussed a million times before my time here on GCA but having just played all the Bandon Dunes courses the last few days I've been reminded of how amazing great bunkering is for great courses offering aesthetic, strategic, technical and challenging aspects (among others). I'd argue that Pacific Dunes especially but also Bandon Trails offers some of the best bunkering on offer. I love the natural shapes and combinations with natural and even imported grasses. Other great examples for me are those of Royal Melbourne, Pasatiempo, Cypress Point etc. Are these the best the world has to offer? Certainly among the best. What do you guys think?

Best I have seen would include Harlech, Muirfield, New Zealand, Woking, Brancaster, Walton Heath, Little Aston and as a an outlier, Huntercombe.  I would also nominate Kington just as a demonstration of less can often be more.  I suspect Princes too will be very well bunkered,  but I haven't seen the final product.

The best bunkering I've come across, which integrates into it's surroundings so perfectly, is Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath and Royal County Down.

Below are two photos of a recent round at Kingston Heath.

I like Sean's list...

I'd add that I still must get to Ganton... The placement and shapes look interesting from the overhead...

For strategic placement and fairness for all abilities, It's hard to beat San Francisco Golf Club.

Pine Valley is pretty amazing.

I'm going to get hammered for this one, but I also love Augusta National's bunkering.  Nah, it's not "natural" but it's beautiful landscape architecture.

I was surprised to find that CC of Scranton has a number of Augusta National type bunkers.  Pretty wild stuff.

Pete...

I think that is a great call.  And I'd add that Chicago Golf Club's are in that same category...if not a tad better IMO.
