A.G.,
Sorry to come across as negative, it was not my intention. I like MPCC and Tobacco Road. I just don't see much at Tot Hill to make me think of the 2 others. Yes, Tot Hill is on some difficult land, but I've been to Greywalls up in Michigan and Mike DeVries had REALLY challenging land and came up with a course far superior to Tot Hill, at least IMO. I think Strantz does regular par 4's and par 5's really well. I look forward to seeing a good short par 4 by Mr Strantz, but I haven't found it yet. Next spring I'm planning on going up to Virginia to see his courses up there.
I would be happy to hear what you like about Tot Hill. Maybe I missed something on my one play there.

Its been a while since I have been to either of them, but in the MB area I always liked Shaftesbury Glen, and Glen Dornoch as well.

Shaftesbury Glen is a little off the beaten path, and at least several years ago there seemed to be some deals that could be had.  Shaftesbury Glen was supposed to be sort of an homage to Tillinghast as I recall when it opened.  And I think Glen Dornoch I think was supposed to be a tribute to Donald Ross.   Glen Dornoch is on a pretty impressive piece of property with much more WOW factor along the inter coastal, Shaftesbury is inland quite a ways but a pretty fun course.  They are not as well known architects (Clyde Johnston I think).  They are both part of the same group called The Glens I think.  There may be some kind of package deals you can get.

Again this was quite a while ago, but I thought with this group the homage to Tilly and Ross might be something of interest.   Obviously most of the golf in MB is pretty homogenized for the masses.

No one on here mentioned The Dunes Club did they?  It is one of the best in MB, and I think it is in that same price range as Caledonia.  I know they are a little more restrictive on how you can get on there, but I think there are companies that can arrange a tee time for you on there.  Anyone know what the situation is here for sure?

Good call; both are a cut above.  Glen Dornoch is very good and very playable until the last three holes, each of which is just tremendously difficult for anyone and almost unplayable for high handicappers.  Shaftesbury is more subdued and another personal favorite at MB, but as you say is rather difficult to get to.  It also has the funkiest clubhouse on the Strand.

Ed,
What I like about Tot Hill won't be surprising; it is the same stuff as the other Strantz courses.  Tremendous variety, the appearance of great difficulty off the tee but in fact very large landing areas, and wonderfully exciting greens.

I have always felt that Tot Hill suffers mainly by comparison to Tobacco Rd.  The two courses are less that 60 miles apart, so they get mentioned together a lot, but the terrain couldn't be more different.  Tobacco Rd. is in the Sandhills, and Strantz could do almost anything he wanted there in shaping the course.  Tot Hill, on the other hand is in the middle of an ancient mountain range, and as such is rocky to excess.  There are severe limitations to what can be done in the Asheboro area without blasting rock with nuclear weapons!

Is Tot Hill the equal of Tobacco Rd, or Caledonia/True Blue?  Decidedly not, and golfers that go there expecting the same level of golf course WILL be disappointed.  But Tot Hill is still a unique and highly artistic piece of GCA, and well worth the time to play.
