Ryder Cup telecast
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:06:14 AM »
If anyone is recording the first six hours of the Ryder Cup, I'd love a copy. I managed to get halfway to MCC before I realized I didn't change from Golf Channel to ESPN. Many thanks!

Bill,

Tongue planted firmly in cheek.

NI pairing tried to get a drop from a sprinkler head and didn't get it.

2nd hole, McIlroy's tee ball went just over the back edge and ended up about 3 inches from a sprinkler head. McDowell asked for relief, Furyk threw a hissy fit, complaining and disputing, initial ruling was he could get relief, then head US ruling guy came by and did not allow relief, McDowell hit a poor shot, subsequently giving hole to US.

The Irish duo were pissed, parred the next courtesy of a missed putt by Furyk and then the Irish team birdied the next 4 holes in a row.

Never piss off the Irish!

McIlroy's tee shot on the par 3 #2 landed right next to, but not on, a plastic sprinkler head cover in the rough near the green. McDowell wanted relief, and he and Furyk got into it as to whether he should get relief. It delayed play by about 10 minutes or so -- the referee in the match called in the head referee to clarify whether relief should be granted. It wasn't, McDowell hit an indifferent chip, and Euro ended up losing the hole. And from the TV reports, the Ulster-men were pretty PO'd about the whole thing.

For what it's worth, when I saw the shot land, my immediate thought was: I wonder if Euro will ask for, and get, relief. McDowell argued it was a "50-50" situation, and argued he deserved the benefit of the doubt in getting relief. Furyk said it was more "80-20" against, and pretty much forced the ruling from the referees. On-course commentators suggested relief for the Euros would've given them an easier shot -- perhaps on the fringe of the green, vs. the rough.

Personally, I didn't think either side was out of line -- it was real close to whether the sprinkler head cover interfered with the stroke, and I didn't think McDowell was out of line to ask about relief. But I also don't think Furyk was out of line -- and he was pretty polite but firm about it -- in questioning the request.

Well, that's one interpretation. While I agree that Furyk might not have done his team any good in the long run, the initial relief ruling was a stretch. (I couldn't help but think of Davis Love refusing to take an exaggerated stance in the rough at one Ryder Cup, which would have given him relief from a horrible lie near a sprinkler hear.) Neither ball nor swing was directly affected by the sprinkler head, and a drop would have taken the ball out of the rough and put it on the fringe. You could hear Furyk saying something to the effect of, "It's my obligation to protect my team." I really wouldn't describe it as a hissy fit. Ultimately, the ruling was reversed, so Furyk certainly had grounds for his objection.

But the delay did seem to suck the momentum out of the U.S. team and fire up the Euros, so it might have been a case of winning the battle but losing the war.

Rick:

The Northern Irishmen are -5 through 9 in foursomes -- that's about as good as you can play in that format. Still only 1 up, largely thanks to Snedeker's putting.

My bad -- 5 birdies was what I meant. Still, that's solid.

Well, there's that, and also the need for some captain to have the cojones to bench Tiger for foursomes. Easily the worst player this morning for the US -- he's missed two fairways by 50+ yards off the tee.

When I try to project who will be on the U.S. Ryder Cup team at Hazeltine in four years, I don't see Tiger as automatic.

Is anyone else unable to access the video feed on rydercup.com, or am I the only one?  I'm stuck in the office today, so naturally I was looking forward to catching the live feed.  Turns out, I haven't been able to see a thing yet.  Very frustrating.

I might have to go to the office gym for an extended workout today just so I can watch ESPN.

Now Snedeker's developed a case of the hooks.  This thing could be over in a hurry.  The side leading after Friday morning Foursomes has won 15 of the last 18 I believe, and this thing could be 4-0.

I'm thinking the U.S. needs to get at least 1.5 pts in this morning session, otherwise it could be over quick.

Still early, but the two middle matches -- now all square -- loom large. Interestingly, the three best players so far for the US seem to be Bradley, Dufner and Snedeker's putter. Furyk and Tiger have been pretty poor, which will make for some interesting choices for Love this afternoon. You have to think he'll send out Bubba, D. Johnson, and almost certainly Kuchar and and Simpson -- will he bench both of the veterans?

I don't think you bench the second ranked player in the world and one of the top five players ever under any circumstance. For all the noise about how "bad" Tiger has been in Ryder Cups, he's only a match or two below .500 for his career. Considering the US performance over the past 12 years or so, that's gotta be about as good as anyone over that time.

Jason:

Have you seen Tiger this morning? All over the place -- some really good shots, some really awful ones. That to me is a guy you put out in fourballs, not foursomes -- esp. with a consistent-as-heck guy like Kuchar sitting on the bench. And Tiger has a horrible Thursday morning career record in the RCup.

Looks like we'll be seeing more of mickelson/bradley.  Personally it may be time to split up Tiger/Stricker.  What about Tiger/Bubba in Fourball?

Or maybe Tiger should head to the range and putting green and work on his game; he's looked really bad. Gotta think Lefty/Bradley go out again, and probably Dufner as well, and Snedeker because he can putt and make birdies. And Bubba and D. Johnson are almost going out for sure.
