I never was a new course seeker but miss the new course rush that once drove this site.  How has not having new courses to seek out changed your life?  What is the good and bad of it all?  Even Shivas finally joined up at a club.

If you haven't played a course before then it's new to you. I have plenty of places, older and newer, to play that I haven't played yet.

Last year they were building a new course just a few miles from my house, I admit I went out of my way several times a week just to see how construction was coming. There are still lots of courses out there that I haven't seen so I guess they are still new to me.

That's like going to see a movie at a theater 3 weeks after its release.  There has always been something about being one of the first to see a course.

It's much easier to make out with your date if you see the movie three weeks after its release date. You should play more golf with attractive women, John. Then again, so should I.

I would disagree with this. I recently went to Bandon and played Bandon Preserve for the first time. Just because I wasn't there on opening day, in no way affected my enjoyment of the course. That being said, I also never see movies on the day they are released, so maybe I don't know what I am missing.

John,

When The Hobbit comes out you want to camp out the night before and wait in line? We can post on GCA from a cold Cinemark parking lot.

And, what about the courses you have played and enjoyed that are not there anymore? Worse, what about the courses you have played but couldn't care less if you ever played them again? My definition of a good golf course is when I have played it (whether for the first or umpteenth time) I can't wait to play it again.

For golf courses the first year is like opening day.  I've been on this site far too long not to know that people often would make treks to courses soon after they opened.  For me it was Canyata, only 30 miles from my home, it was super cool to be one of the first to play there.  Now, who cares.

You'll notice we play at newer courses or newly restored courses a lot. I'd love to play some more worn-in courses, but my wife just doesn't like golf, not to mention I married interracial and there are still a lot of clubs that are three weeks past their release date, metaphorically speaking, that sort of frown on mixed couples getting a little too fresh on mixed league night. I'm excited to see Taken 2 with her in December though.

As for your original post though, I find that if you just move once every year or so you're always able to play courses that are new for you and sloppy seconds for others. Like with other things, you can always just assume you're the first person who's ever played it unless you're told otherwise, and no one will tell you otherwise if you just don't ask.

If there are two guys who would get interviewed by the local news, it would be us.  If I don't see a movie opening weekend then I don't go.  Same thing for Broadway shows, new car models (always a mistake) and many other consumer goods.  Probably the only rerun that gets me everytime is the McRib and it's kinda new because it was gone.

Even in Kentucky this greatly surprises me.  Personally I think marrying a white girl is so Honey Boo Boo.  note:  June and Sugarbear aren't even married.

One of the draws to Bandon has been the consistent opening of new courses or attractions, kinda like Disney.  I wonder if it will grow stagnant if that changes.

I'm in and maybe the McRib will be around, I've never had one.

combined with the Streamsong opening, the whole team is excited for this New Years trip to Orlando!

The best thing about no new courses is that architects are instead restoring the old ones. Frankly, I prefer Golden Age courses over modern ones by a wide margin generally, so I'm happier to see so many courses restored to their former glory rather than another monotonously predictable new course.

Better not come to Streamsong or to Dismal River then.  They are monotonously predictably cool, from 1-18.

Being one of the first to see a course is overrated. I played both Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald at 8:00 am on their opening days and probably wasn't one of the first 50 (or in OM's case 200) golfers to have played either.

I'd agree with David Cronheim except for when the golden age courses we love are DISIMPROVED instead of being IMPROVED - as happens far too often. On second thoughts, it may be worth the risk because brand new courses in the traditional golfing countries are becoming fewer and fewer.

David,

Do you at all miss the buzz around Rustic Canyon that we once had when it first opened?  Seems like I met you in the parking lot.

Sorry Tom! Exceptions to every rule. I'm very much looking forward to both courses. Of course, I was referring to other, lesser architects when I overgeneralized. I also pictured yet another horribly boring resort or housing development course.

When the public course Gil is doing is ready that will solve that problem, then the Sheep ranch will be built. Bandon has 10+ year of newness left it it.

John,

Put me square in the camp of "new to me".  Even though I was about 80 years late on CPC, it wasn't any less thrilling to me.

Ditto for any other top notch course I've played...didn't care one bit how old or new it was...I just plain love awesome courses.
