Four days of tournament golf
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:58:01 PM »
I just finished playing four rounds of competitive golf in four days and am about as exhausted as I can remember being in a long time.

I have gone on many 36 hole a day trips without feeling anywhere close to this tired.

I have newfound respect for what it takes to do that week after week for a living.

Jason -

I agree with you 100%. There are 21 guys on the PGA Tour who have played between 50 and 88 rounds of tournament golf this year and have a stroke average of less than 70. Those guys are really, really good. ;)

Jason,

There truly are two types of golf: casual and tournament!

I can't imagine that it helped that it was warm (for this time of year) this past weekend with highs in the 80's, followed by two raw days with highs in the 50's and 15mph winds....that'll take a lot out of you.

Hey Jason,  I think it's harder to play recreational golf and tournament golf.  Tournament golf is a specific mindset  Tournament players are so mentally tough when you consider travel, hotels, absence from family.  The purses are big but the sacrifices are undervalued.

I get exhausted just WATCHING Rose compete for several days in a row.

Part of the problem, I think, is that in tournament medal play, in addition to the pressures of counting every stroke, there's just too much standing around and waiting.

I wonder if four days of Match Play would have left you much less exhausted. I suspect that it would.

I caddied for a friend this week...  15 mph winds were the lightest we saw.   For the late Monday starters, it was a swirling 2.5 club wind for almost the entire round.    With the greens drying out as well, a few holes has pins which were nearly unplayable

Nice thoughts but the primary cause of my poor play in the Mid-Am was sucking.  This greens were faster and the pins more difficult at Windsong last weekend.

I think not. Every match is like being in contention on Sunday afternoon; you know that just a couple of bad shots can make you a loser, and you might not have time to recover. Match play is more intense in that way. A couple of close matches drains you pretty quickly; it's like winning a tournament and then having to tee it up in another tournament the next morning (or even that afternoon!).

Agreed, you seem to grind over every shot in match play even though sometimes I think the opposite should be true,
