Good luck to Matt.  Fellow Kinsgley member and current club champion Andrew Chapman also made it to match play.  Through four holes, looks like his opponent is off to a hot start.

Andrew's opponent is the prize pupil of my teaching pro.  I guess I can't blame my play on poor instruction.

Matt and I have been texting back and forth.  He is playing well and enjoying his time in Chicagoland.  He did allow that he (and most of the field, according to his conversations) greatly prefers Knollwood to Conway Farms.  I completely agree.  From tee to green, 18 of Knollwood's 18 holes are just great.  The course makes great architectural sense and it has a great routing and a great set of greens.  I don't have that many nice things to say about Conway in comparison.  Not saying it isn't a good course or a good test, just remarking that Knollwood is vastly superior.

Andrew doesn't look like he's playing all that great, but your pro's pupil just fired a 31 on the front.  Not many players are going to beat that, even on a good day.

Was that a 31 at Knollwood? that would be amazing assuming they are playing the back tees. Great course!

Pretty sure it's all Conway after the stroke play.

Wow. Don't mess with Sammy Schmitz. He won 7 & 6.

It would be tough to beat that on an executuve course.

Is there anything more suspenseful than following golf "live" via the Internet?

Awesome, Matt!

I will admit to opening the link above and seeing "DEF" under Matt's photo and making a snap-judgement that Matt was defeated!  I then went hole by hole on the bottom and realized my mistake (with relief).

Good luck in your next match.

Thanks everyone. That was the most intense match I've ever played. Honestly I could hardly talk for a few minutes afterwards. It was very back and forth and well played on a tough course. After nine holes I was one under...and one down. I would have shot 72 or 73 in stroke play.

The 18th hole is worth a quick description. We were all square. Adam drove left and it ran through the bunker into the native grass. I drove in the bunker in an iffy lie, from where I chunked it terribly into 6-inch rough short of the crossing creek. Adam tried to carry the creek as well. His ball landed short of the creek, bounced on a rock in the middle of the creek, and crossed over to the other side. I was lucky to hit my 3rd shot 70 yards into the fairway from the lie I had - my worst of the week. Adam played his third short left of the green about 40 yards from the hole, while I lay three at 166 yards. Somehow after a few iffy swings in a row, I made my best swing of the day and hit perfect 8-iron that slammed into the green 3 feet from the cup. Adam played to about 10 feet, just missed, and I made my 3 footer for par to win one up.
