I had been meaning to play at Port Fairy (located 3.5 hours west of Melbourne, Australia) for a while now, and finally I did yesterday.

To the RHS of the par-5 12th is some beautiful dune land, as well as further on from the boundary of the golf course. Is this the best land "not available" for golf which remains untouched?? Apparently these dunes are on crown land, and the club unsuccessfully tried to purchase this a number of years ago, even though the existing course is also on crown land.

Phil - perhaps in parts, but I think there is enough room out there to create a wonderful "out and back" links while utilising some of the existing holes.

There is similar land up and down the west coast of Michigan.  Every time I visit my Mom in Muskegon I go out to the dunes and wonder, "What would a golf course on these dunes be like?" We will never know.

Woah Scott!!  It is uncanny how similar that picture is to one I have from the opposite side of the world in New Zealand.

You've got me there Scott - any idea of who owns this land and whether golf is even an option?

No idea who owns it, Ben. David Tepper told me Trump looked at it before settling on his site near Aberdeen.

I seem to recall there was a reason why it couldn't become a golf course, and maybe with Castle Stuart, Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Tain, Dornoch x2, Golspie and Brora all established in that area, there may not be a market for another course anyway.

Ben, I'm a (new) member at Port Fairy.

The land beside the 12th in indeed untouchable but probably isn't wide enough for golf holes anyway. There is other land to the right of the 14th tee which could fit a couple of holes in, and again more land to the right of the 16th fairway. Indeed, you could probably build hundreds of holes heading back from there towards Warrnambool through Killarney and beyond.

About 5k's on the other side of Port Fairy, heading towards Portland, there is an area of untouched sand dunes which could easily accommodate 36 holes. It could be Barnbougle-esque if you could ever get your hands on it.

Embo looks fun, but I'd take the land at Port Fairy because of the greater scale of the elevation changes.

There is land like that all over the place actually.  Go take a drive up the california/oregon coast and you will see several instances of that type of coast line with small dunes right on the ocean.

Would agree, it will likely never get touched for golf...tis a pity!

There is no doubt this is one of the prettiest pieces of land that has ever been butchered. It is a beautiful piece of land. Robert Trent Jones, Sr., has done some real nice courses, but this isn't one of them.
