Tacoma Public Golf Options
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:36:03 AM »
Other than Chambers Bay--no need to kick that dead horse--what are the most preferable public golf options within 30 minutes of Tacoma?  Also, are there any clubs worth joining that are accepting applications?  I only ask because it looks like I'll be living there starting in February.

Join Fircrest if you can.

JBLM?

Yeah, McChord AFB.  Back to the C-17.  Commander called while I was at the gym and gave me 30 minutes to say yes.  Such is life.  I'm over the moon excited.

Lots of new golf courses to see.  None of them have bermuda rough!

JBLM?

I've read that their course is pretty good. Haven't had a chance to play though.

You should be near to Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which will take you to Bremerton, which will give you access to Gold Mountain. Can't do better for public courses than that in western Washington.

The Home course will be a good option.

Oakbrook and Tacoma CC will be good private options as well.

The courses on the Base are pretty good as well.

I've played Chambers, The Home Course, and Tacoma Country Club. All three are good. TCC is private and I remember thinking I would enjoy being a member there.

Good thing I came out of hibernation to check in today, and saw the news that the Captain is belatedly heading this way!

The Home Course and the occasional round at Gold Mountain-Olympic (but don't get stuck in the Narrows Bridge traffic) are far and away your best bets.  You will learn quickly when and when not to venture onto I-5 to get around, as the traffic into and off JBLM at certain times of the day and week is unbearable.  Stick to the courses on base on those days.

Expanding the perimeter a bit, I have a fondness for the Classic Golf Club as well, the Moore-family owned property in Spanaway.  Very solid track and very traditional PNW-type tree-lined track but with some intriguing green complexes.

Also, Washington National and Druids Glen, depending on course conditions, can also be pleasant diversions, but would not be worth your regular plays, IMO...Lake Spanaway golf course is also quite pleasant.

Congrats!

Welcome Ben! We could use a fourth on my foursome!

Around Tacoma, the places to play are as follows.

Privates:
Tacoma G&CC
Fircrest

Public:
Chambers Bay - Duh (you should look into getting an annual pass)
The Home Course - the other course from US Am
Hawk's Prairie Links - a very entertaining course and reasonably priced
Hawk's Prairie Woodlands - might as well do 36 holes
Druid's Glen - has some very solid holes
Washington National - wide fairways and big greens, what's not to like?

Across the bridge:
Gold Mountain (Olympic) - 3rd best course in the state in my opinion
Trophy Lake - another Fought course, pretty fun
McCormick Woods - Sahalee lite

Military Courses!!!
Whispering Firs
Eagles Pride
Both allow outside play, I believe. It has been a very long time since I've played them so I have not much to say...

Do send us some details when the plans firm up. Will do best to welcome you here.

Just looking at Washington National ... I like the look of the "Long" 14th with the Hell's half Acre style hazard. But the creek on 15-17 is the least natural looking thing I've ever seen.

Guys thanks.

We are thrilled.  I am pretty excited to be so close to Seattle, Vancouver, Mt Ranier (skiing/hiking), Olympic Nat'l Park, North Cascades Nat'l Park, a days drive to Bandon, and most importantly, 2 hours 31 minutes from John Kirk's back porch.

The creek reminds me of how Fought brought the "Ghost Creek" into play on some holes out at Pumpkin Ridge. Not my Favorite features.

FYI Peter, I pulled those pics off the website.

You are also within driving distance to Whistler, which is, in my opinion, the finest ski resort in North America.

there you go! all the golf you can stand for the cost of a bottom tier private. how can you beat that?

i guess the negative would be the slow play.

Hey Ben,

I just got back from my summer maintenance internship at Aldarra Golf Club up by Seattle.  While I was up there I did a day trip down to Tacoma to play Tacoma Country and Golf Club and The Home Course.

Here is the photo tour I did of Tacoma C & GC
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,53092.msg1219815/topicseen.html#msg1219815

I will admit it is pretty tight on some holes, but overall the course is fantastic and would be a great members course.  Everyone walks, the course is ALWAYS in perfect condition, and has a great ambience.

The Home course was good, but IMO could have been A LOT better given the piece of property they had.

I think you will like the Northwest, I have enjoyed my two summers up there.

Better learn to start the ball straight with no curve.  Being down in the desert, all my + Handicap buddies move the ball all over the place, and still shoot scores under par.  The whole summer I was up there playing these narrow golf courses, I was just always thinking about how you could never get around with a 20 yard cut or draw.

Enjoy, I might be back up there once I am done with school.

I live in Redmond but do the lion's share of my golfing in and around Tacoma -- which is blessed for golf compared to Seattle, in my opinion. Besides Chambers, I have a fondness for The Home Course, The Classic, and Gold Mountain (Olympic). I also played Tacoma Golf & Country Club and could picture being a member there. I hear many positives about Fiercest as well, but have yet to play it.

I suspect after you've been here awhile you'll learn why so many military guys return to the Tacoma area to retire.

Gold Mountain third? The best 2 are probably CB and WV but GM to me is clearly behind the top privates.

Sorry, when I sit down and really think about it, I just think it is slightly better than Aldarra. But I can certainly see how others would rate Aldarra higher (I have changed my mind on this before).

Ben - Enjoy the weather :) Ha! Just kidding, the summers are really nice - those big planes have windshield wipers right???

Check out the RMG Club deal - http://rmgclub.com/ - Gives you some options in the area for a good price. I have only played the Classic which is a nice little track. I think Oakbrook used to be private and not sure about McCormick Woods. Obviously I know the guys involved - they have received a strong local response due to the very reasonable pricing.

Tacoma CC is pretty nice - That's Ryan's home course when he is in town. I have not played there or Fircrest, definitely worth checking both out.

Skyridge in Squim is supposedly very cool - ask Wags about there - he loves it there. Super linksy and unique. Don't think that has been mentioned yet.

Check out the Waverley reno in P'town when you get a chance!

Never got the U-2 application off base.  This came out of nowhere, too good to pass up.
