Some UK golf holes for you to recognise 4

Here are some 4th holes – or that is what they are labelled. Could be wrongly labelled, of course.

A

This course has featured already in earlier posts but hasn’t yet been identified.

B

Easy!

C


This course has already been identified. It is Ilkley, one of Yorkshire’s older clubs. The first several holes run beside or over the River Wharfe, including one hole which plays onto an island.

That bunker gives it away easily, Royal West Norfolk

E

Nice fingerprint! I don’t immediately recognise this one.

F

I’m now getting confused!

G

The washed out colour should give this one away – the course has already been identified. Aberdovey.

H

Another course which has been identified, Sherwood Forest.

This, too, has been identified. It is Ashburnham, which must be one of the least dramatic of all out links courses.

This course has been identified. These are the 4th and 17th at Wallasey.

Tony, it's even more galling when I can't remember where it is. Not only have I played there but I took photos as well!

Anders, If memory serves me correctly I didn't take pictures of Rungsted beyond about the 6th hole. I had started out on my own but then joined some members and I didn't really have time for photos thereafter. I think this was probably in the 1980s and I believe there have been alterations since then. By the time we got to the holes on the other side of the railway line it started to rain and was too dark for photography.

I'm traveling and don't have my stuff with me, but the major restoration was in the 1970's, primarily to make room for a driving range as far as i know. The redesign was carried out by a member, Otto Bojesen. In the late 1980's Jan Sederholm was hired to do some tree clearing and work on some of the greens, but the playing corridors were more or less unchanged.

The original C.A. Mackenzie holes you have played are 1 (was 10th), 4, 5, 8, 10 (was 2nd and tee has been moved quite a bit to the left) 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

Here are those answers I can give. There are the usual guesses.

A Llanymynech. This is a famous 'international' hole. You tee off in Wales and hole out in England. Although the majority of the club's land and the clubhouse are located in Wales this is actually an English club. It is something to do with the benefits of being a member of the English Golf Union or the Welsh Golf Union. In fact this is a curious hole where the brave drive blind over trees and bushes to leave themselves a short chip onto the green. The rest of us don't! There will be further photos of this course which isn't great, but it is a great spot to be on a nice day.
B 4th green, 5th fairway at Sunningdale Old.
C Ilkley
D Royal West Norfolk
E Totally stumped! This course will come back to haunt me!
F I'm going to assume it's Ilkley because of the wintery trees etc.
G Aberdovey. As you can see most of the course is laid out in the flatlands. Some see this as a fault, but I doubt that anybody could have golfed in those dunes in the late 19th century when the course was first laid out and nowadays you would not get permission to venture into them.
