Wanna play a Doakish, Hanse-like, Strantzy course Sat 9/1?
« on: August 28, 2012, 05:11:15 PM »
Well, you're in luck! CJ Carder and I will be teeing it up at the Parkland course at Legends Resort here in Myrtle Beach this coming Saturday, September 1 at 8:12 am.

Parkland has something of an eccentric history design-wise. Tom Doak (with help from then-assistant Gil Hanse) began, he and developer Larry Young parted ways and Mike Strantz finished it, basically. But fear not;he golf course is not a mongrel by any means because of this. Rather, it's one of the more interesting and underrated courses down here. It has some wildly contoured greens and gnarly bunkers and while it winds through forest in a way that the other two courses on the property do not, it is by no means claustrophobic.

The best part? It'll end up being $37 to play, including breakfast, lunch and two beers or sodas. Hard to beat. Join us, won't you?

PM me if interested.

But why would you play a Doakish course, instead of the real thing next door to it?

Tom--

Fair question. CJ has played your Heathland course on-site before, I'm told, but not the Parkland, and as the presumptive host, I could not but oblige. I played Heathland in early July with some former golf team buddies and a great time was had by all. It was firmer and faster than I've seen in years, which was great fun. But now that it's apparently monsoon season in Myrtle Beach, nowhere is remotely firm or fast lately.

But why would you play a Doakish course, instead of the real thing next door to it?

So you would recommend playing the Raynor course at MPCC over the Raynor-ish course next door at Cypress Point?

And you would recommend playing the Old Tom Morris New course at St Andrews over the Morris-ish Old Course?

I can't imagine ever playing anything but the Heathlands at the Legends resort again.  Heathlands, however, is well worth seeking out and is one of my favorite courses in the area, not to mention a great value.

Just one bump from me, I promise.

Jud, would you really split ten rounds at Legends 10-0-0 in favor of Heathland?

I probably won't play 10 rounds at the Legends the rest of my life, but if I do they'll all be at the Heathlands.  There are plenty of other good courses to play in the area that are much better than the other 2 offerings at Legends IMO.

Wow.  I had no idea.

I've played Heathland (and knew it was Doak's) and both True Blue and Caledonia (LOVE Caledonia!).

But I had no idea that Parkland at Legends was touched by either Doak or Stranz.
