You have been asked about...
« on: August 28, 2012, 02:32:25 AM »
you're favorite short par 3, long par 3, short par 5, long par 5, and of course short par 4, but what about the long par 4? Usually long par 4's are looked down upon as it requires less strategy and more "hit it long and straight," and they are the holes formed when the USGA thinks a par 5 is too easy, but some of the great holes in the world are long par 4's. So, what is you're favorite long par 4. You can have more than just one favorite hole. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Here are some of mine:

#4 at Pacific Dunes

#14 at Chambers Bay

The Road Hole

17 Old Course, St Andrews
14 Royal Dornoch
8 Muirfield
5 Berwick upon Tweed (Goswick)
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

15 at Kingsley Club - I love the small green that creates an interesting decision on whether to layup or go for the green on the second.  The design gives a short hitter an opportunity to compete with a longer hitter by positioning the second at the ideal angle into the green.

14 at Royal Dornoch - same idea

Another one which springs to mind is 18 at Southerndown, with its split level split fairway.

I won't answer in specific, but I think the key to a great long par 4 is that the challenge should come mainly from the length and not other factors, i.e. hazards, O.B., absurd sloping, etc. If I had one gripe with the Ocean Course at Kiawah it would be that some of their long par 4's are also squeezed very tightly by hazards (#10 comes to mind if I'm recalling the numbers correctly). A good long par 4 can have hazards or OB, but shouldn't make the bailout overly penal. There is nothing worse than a 480 yard par 4 with no room to miss.

#9 at Goslpie GC, aptly named "Paradise." From the club's website:

"Who ever called this Paradise? A 420 yard Par 4 with heather on either side, a slope which pushes the ball into the heather and away from the line towards the green which lies off to the left-hand edge of the fairway with a further curl of deep heather to cause problems, it is far from my idea of paradise but others may disagree. It is, however, a fair challenge and a par on this hole may well be viewed as a shot won."

The heather is in bloom right now and it is beautiful!

#17 at Brora is another great long par-4.

Can't argue about about Foxy or the Road Hole.  Sea Headrig is an automatic for me as well.

Does the 4th at Sandwich belong with the others?

What about about North Berwick's 2nd?

Brora's 17th?  Any thought for the 3rd there as well?

How bout the 15th at Sandwich?

Ciao

10 at Kiawah isn't long.

We may disagree on our definition of long, but I think 447 is long enough to qualify as long.

Hmmm...

I have it at 380.  You are right, 447 is long.  Unless you drive it 300 yards.

Possibly the greatest surprise of my trip to Dornoch in May.  9 at Golspie is a brilliant hole, which is every bit as good as anything I have played in Surrey/Berkshire.

What about about North Berwick's 2nd?

The coolest thing about that hole is that the easiest approach is from the beach - as long as the tide is out!

When you bail out way left the hole plays about 500 yards.  Over a wall.   Great long 4.

Don had many great words regarding the strategy of The Road Hole in a not so long ago thread.

And Wolf Point has three long two shot holes (5, 13 & 17 -- 2 & 11 are longish) - at least one of those is often someones favorite.

It is funny to me that this thread started with the 4th at Pac Dunes, because when I played there, I hit good driver - 9 iron on the green, but hit good driver- 3 iron on the green at 13, despite 13 "being" 35 yards shorter. The prevailing wind really helps to determine which holes are long par 4s.

I would nominate 3 at The Country Club and 18 at Merion.

That is so true. When I played in March, I had to play 4 as a 3-shorter and 13 with a pw that went to the back edge.
