GCAofTD - #1 - Willie Davis
« on: August 25, 2012, 02:44:45 PM »
This is the first in a series of threads designed to collect information on the early American architects (understanding that many of these men were not actually American).  I'm hoping to get a list of attributions for each architect, including original design work, redesigns, renovations, consultations, etc.  I've done a bit of research, but certainly not an exhaustive amount.  Links to prior GCA threads, offsite articles or any other information related to the GCAofTD would be greatly appreciated.

First up, Willie Davis:

Shinnecock
Newport

Anything else?

Jim:

Surprisingly, Davis doesn't make the list of Scots discussed in MacWood's article.  I know he arrived in North America about ten years before most of his peers, spending time at Royal Montreal before moving on to lay out Shinnecock and eventually accepting the golf pro position at Newport.  His focus seems to have been more on teaching than laying out golf courses.

If his name wasn't attached to two prominent clubs (both of which saw several iterations of changes after his work), he'd probably be just a footnote at this point.

Add Point Judith to the list, which was renovated by Donald Ross in 1927.

Additionally, C&W say Davis laid out a couple of Canada's earliest courses, including Ottawa GC in 1891. They also credit him w/adding 9 to Apawamis.
