Had Crump ever mentioned the desire to build a second course?

That's a good point, but, remember, on the par 4's on the big course, not everybody hit's their drive or second shots to the same points, thus the variety afforded on the "short course" is interesting.

It's also nice that they indicate the yardage at the tee.

And they were able to do this all because Ernie Ransome caught a glimpse of the land while riding in a train/car heading east alongside/on East Atlantic Ave.

I heard he was on a hunting trip?

I thought it was first seen from the Grassy Knoll. Guess not.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.
