(OT) Best place to find old sets of irons?
« on: August 23, 2012, 01:31:05 PM »
I've had my TaylorMade muscle back blades for over 5 years, and I've played so much with them that they are starting to show significant wear spots (especially the 7-PW). I love those irons, but TaylorMade doesn't make them any more. Does anyone have recommendations for a website or place where I might be able to buy an old set? Is it worth it to call the company directly?

There are a couple of sets on offer on EBay, but they look to be significantly used.

John E. -

I can't think of a better place then e-bay. Sooner or later, whatever you are looking for (and many things you are not looking for) will turn up there.

John-Ping is really the only equipment manufacturer who seems to keep significant amounts of new dead stock.

Try a site called Golf WRX. Lot's of people selling on that site tend to have multiple sets of irons, so some of the sets sold have less wear, browning esp. if they weren't their 'gamers'

On that subject, I do have a set of Taylor Made 2004 RAC TP Combos (3-5 CB/6-PW) with not much wear on them if you're interested.  ;)

I've heard that Ping will "restore" old irons... is that true?

I've been playing the same set of Eye 2s since high school, and have never felt the need to change. I'm very comfortable with them. But they are getting to the point where the faces are getting pretty worn.

Thanks for the responses. Just to be clear, if anyone has a right-handed set of TaylorMade Rac TP Muscleback Blades that look like the ones below, I'd be happy to take them off your hands.  :)

Matt,

This is true.  Ping will retumble the irons and also regroove them for you.  They come back looking like  brand new heads.   If your Eye 2's are Berrylium they will just retumble, but will not regroove.  I believe you can also still buy new Eye 2's directly from Ping.  Buying a high quality used set off Ebay is the cheaper option, but I understand attachment to a trusty set of sticks.

There used to be a store called Second Swing Golf 10 minutes from my home. I bought a cool set of barely used Macgregor blades there for $50, same with my Ping i3 driver (which a gca friend called an antique :)). They have a website (retail store didn't survive):

http://www.2ndswing.com/

Also, for your particular search, perhaps:

http://www.taylormadegolfpreowned.com/

Good luck.

Use eBay.  I was looking for a set of Goldwin AVDP NP-57 blades for a while.  These are the Nick Price blades that were the cat's a$$ in the mid to late 90's.  Finally I found a set that was essentially brand new so I picked them up!

I have had some success at eBay. Golfsmith and many other retailers will also often have some used sets on hand.

I may look into that. Depending on cost, I may do it or try getting something more recent. I like the G5s and G10s.

Can't recommend Ping's refurbish work highly enough.  They are amazing.

I sent them a set of i5 irons with over 1000 rounds on them.  They retumbled, regrooved, repainted, checked and corrected loft and lie, checked and corrected the swingweight, replaced both medallions on the back of each club, and regripped them, all for $16 per club.  It was door-to-door in exactly two weeks, and the clubs look gem mint.

Do any other club manufacturers do this? Or only Ping?

Try The Iron Factory. They refinish yours and sell refinished clubs:

The Iron factory is probably the best place to have forged irons refurbished.  They do typically come back a swingwieght point or two less than when they were new however.

To the OP.  As others have said, Ebay and GolfWrx are the best places for used irons.  I believe I know someone who has a lightly used set of the irons you seek.  I'll see if he has an interest in selling them.

I am obviously in the minority that thinks 5 year old irons are new.

Clubfinders in Dallas is a good place to try but I think that will be an easy set to find a replacement for, I see them out there still plenty.

I'll probably do 4-SW, so.... 8 clubs.... $128.

I think that's worth doing. During the winter, of course :)
